Historical Description

TYBERTON is a parish on one of the roads from Hereford to Hay, 9 miles west from Hereford, about 2 north from Vowchurch station on the Golden Valley railway, and 8 ½ west from Moorhampton station on the Hereford and Brecon branch of the Midland railway, in the Southern division of the county, Webtree hundred, Dore petty sessional division and union, Hereford county court district, and rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Hereford. The church of St. Mary, erected by William Brydges in 1720, is an edifice of brick, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a lofty western tower with pinnacles containing a clock and 5 bells: of the old Norman church a beautiful arch remains in the south porch: the reredos of carved oak is said to be Italian: there are several mural tablets, dating from an early part of the 17th century, to various members of the Brydges and Lee-Warner families, including William Brydges esq. ob. 1656, Margaret Brydges, ob. 1671, Edmund Brydges, ob. 1722, and Kempe Brydges ob. 1742, sons of Marshall Brydges esq. the Rev. Daniel Henry Lee-Warner, of Walshingham Abbey, Norfolk, and Tyberton, Hereford, d. 1858, and Ann, his widow, d. 1868: on the chancel floor are various incised stones to the Greene family, to whom part of the parish formerly belonged: the church was restored and refitted in 1879, at the expense of R. H. Lee-Warner esq. The register dates from the year 1672. The living is a chapel, attached to Madley, average tithe rent-charge £456, joint net yearly value £385, including 1 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Hereford, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Philip Edgar Pratt M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, who resides at Madley. This place is remarkable for its very fine plantations of evergreens and coniferae, also for its large oak trees. A magnificient view of six counties is ob tained from Stockley hill. Tyberton Court, a handsome mansion with a fine park, is the property of Robert Henry Lee-Warner esq. D.L., J.P. who is chief landowner, it is at present the residence of William S. Walker esq.; there is no lord of the manor. The soil is sandy; subsoil, sandstone rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans and swedes. The area is 1,126 acres; rateable value, £1,127; the population in 1891 was 126.
