Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
STIBBINGTON is a parish and village, on the Great North road from London to York, and bounded on the east and north by the river Nene and on the borders of Northamptonshire, containing the Wansford station on the Northampton and Peterborough branch of the London and North Western railway, 82 miles from London, 21 north from Huntingdon, and 9 west from Peterborough: it is in the Northern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Norman Cross, union and comity court district of Stamford, rural deanery of Yaxley, archdeaconry of Huntingdon, and diocese of Ely. Wansford bridge, 1 mile west-by-north, has 13 arches, one half being in this parish and the other in Wansford; it was repaired in 1673 and rebuilt and widened in 1795. The church of St. John the Baptist is a small and very ancient edifice of stone, in the Norman and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western bellcote with spirelet containing 2 bells: in the chancel there is a low-side window: the western door has a very fine arch with enriched Norman work: there are two stained windows at the east end to the Rev. William Wing, rector 1832—68: the church was thoroughly renovated in 1848, and affords 300 sittings. The register, included in that of Sibson, dates from the year 1595. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £340, with residence, in the gift of the Duke of Bedford and held since 1868 by the Rev. Charles Trollope, who is a surrogate. The rectory, which adjoins the church, is a mansion in the Elizabethan style, and was erected about the end of the 16th century. There are charities to the amount of £8 11s. derived from sundry small benefactions, amounting in all to £310, which is invested in £2 ¾ per Cent. Consols, and the interest is distributed yearly amongst the poor of the parish in coals &c. The old stocks still remain on the main road opposite the Manor House at Sibson, and are in good preservation. Stibbington Hall, the residence of Mrs. Harriet Vipan, erected in 1625, is a building of stone, in the Jacobean style, situated in pleasant grounds. The Duke of Bedford is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is rich loam; subsoil, gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The area is 1,515 acres of land and 27 of water; rateable value, £2,846; the population in 1891 was 480.
A School Board of 5 members was formed Oct. 10, 1876; Francis Burdett, Wansford, clerk to the board & attendance officer.
Board School (mixed), built, with residence for master, in 1870, by the Duke of Bedford, for 150 children; average attendance, 90.
