Historical Description
ADDINGTON is a retired village and parish, very pleasantly situated in the midst of diversified scenery, near the Maidstone road, on a small mill stream tributary to the Medway, called the Eden, which rises in the parish and gives its name to Edenton and to Addington; this place is 2 miles west-by-north from Mailing station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 3 east from Wrotham, and 7 west from Maidstone. The parish is in the Mid division of the county, Aylesford lathe, Larkfield hundred, Mailing petty sessional division and union, Maidstone county court district, and in the rural deanery of North Mailing and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. Margaret is of stone, in the Perpendicular style, and has a tower, erected in 1403 and containing 4 bells: there is a monument to the Watton family and some brasses: the church was restored and enlarged about 1858. The register of baptisms dates from March 3rd, 1562; burials, 30th November, 1563; marriages, 9th May, 1568. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £193, with 20 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of C. J. S. Whitburn esq. and held since 1883 by the Rev. Julian Guise M.A. of Magdalen College, Oxford. Addington Park, covering 200 acres, is the property of Charles Joseph Sofer Whitburn esq. who is lord of the manor and the principal landowner: in the park are Druidical remains, consisting of several very large slabs of stone, some of them weighing many tons each, resting against each other and forming portions of two circular inclosures. The soil is sandy; subsoil, sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and hops. The area is 1,116 acres of land and 3 of water; rateable value, £2,096; the population in 1901 was 229 in the civil, and 175 in the ecclesiastical parish.
