Historical Description

ALDINGTON (usually called Allington) is a village and parish, 1 ½ miles south from Smeeth station on the Ashford and Dover section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 73 from London, 6 west from Hythe and 6 south-east from Ashford, in the Eastern division of the county, partly within the liberty of Romney Marsh, partly within the liberty, municipal borough and port of Hythe and partly within the franchise of Bircholt; in Shepway lathe, Street and Worth hundreds, Elham petty sessional division, East Ashford union, Hythe county court district and in the rural deanery of North Lympne and archdeaconry and diocese of Canterbury. The village is pleasantly situated on the ridge of the Quarry hills, which command an extensive view of Romney Marsh, the Channel, and the coast of France. Aldington Knoll was a Roman beacon; between it and the church is the site of a Roman town, or station. The River Stour rises near Low Park Farm, in this parish. The church of St. Martin is an ancient building of stone, erected at five different periods, but chiefly in the Perpendicular style, and has a tower containing 6 bells: there are remains of a Saxon tower, some very fine carved oak, including six stalls with misereres; several memorial windows, monuments and brasses; the church was restored in 1875; there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory,. net yearly value £450, with 7 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1898 by the Rev. William Eastgate Middleton Nunn M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There is a Friends’ Christian Mission room at Clap Hill. William Fordred, by will, 11th July, 1550, gave a sum of money out of the rents of 25 acres of land in St. Mary, Romney Marsh; William Pantrey, by will, in 1587, gave one annuity of ten shillings a year, to be paid out of “Cabbin Lands,” in Lympe; Thomas Hogben, 15th April, 1712, gave unto 20 poor families of this parish one shilling, out of a piece of marsh land called “Shrewsbury,” in Bilsington. Close to the church are the remains of one of the manor houses of the Archbishops of Canterbury, now called Aldington Court and at present the residence of Thomas Samuel Beeching Moses esq. Mrs. Herbert Deedes, of Saltrwood Castle, is lady of the manor and principal landowner; Lord Brabourne P.C. and Sir Patteson Nickalls., of Chislehurst, are also landowners. The soil varies; subsoil, rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The area is 3,435 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £4,491; the population in 1901 was 540.

National School (mixed & infants), founded by the late William Deedes esq. of Saltwood Castle; the premises were built in 1835, for 150 children; average attendance, 97.
