Historical Description

ALKHAM is a parish, 5 miles north-east from Folkestone, 5 west-by-north from Dover, south-west from Kearsney station on the Canterbury and Dover section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 74 from London, in the Eastern division of the county, Folkestone hundred, lathe of Shepway, Wingham petty sessional division, Dover union, county court and county police district and in the rural deanery of Dover and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of St. Anthony the Martyr is, of rough flint, chiefly in the Early English style, and has a tower containing 4 bells: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, with that of Capel Le Ferne annexed, joint net yearly value £300, including 9 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1901 by the Rev Alfred Robert Jackman M.A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge. The great tithes a, re commuted at £500. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. The Earl of Radnor is lord of Wolverton manor. The principal landowners are Sir William Henry Crandall kt. of Kearsney, Dover, and Francis Drake Brockman esq. of Beachborough, Hythe.

In this parish is an eylebourn, which without any appearance of head or spring, sends out periodically an amount of water sufficient to turn, a mill; this occurs about once in four years and occasionally at shorter intervals. The soil is chalky loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 3,210 acres of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £2,228; the population in 1901 was 564.
