Historical Description

HOO-ALLHALLOWS is a parish in the Marsh district, 4 miles north-east from Sharnal Street station on the Hundred of Hoo branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 9 miles north-east from Rochester, in the Mid division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, Hoo hundred and union, Rochester petty sessional division and county court district, and in the rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester. The village lies high, but is surrounded by marshes. The Thames bounds the parish on the north Yantlet Creek, an inlet of the Thames, dividing this parish from the Isle of Graine, marks, by a stone on its right or eastern bank, the eastern boundary of the jurisdiction of the conservators of the Thames, and on the opposite side is a coastguard station. The church of All Saints is in mixed styles of Gothic, from the 12th to the 14th century, and has a wooden turret: there are some brasses: in 1890 the chancel was restored, the turret rebuilt and the windows renewed, and the entire nave was restored, and the seats renovated, in 1901, at a cost of about £400: the church has 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1629; and there are churchwardens’ accounts from 1555. The living is a vicarage, net income £150, with 41 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Rochester, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Frederick John Hammond Assoc. K.C.Lond. Slough Fort, in this parish, stands on the banks of the Thames, about three quarters of a mile from the village. Mrs. David Day is lady of the manor. The principal landowners are the Drapers’ Company and the trustees of Huggins’s charity. The soil is clay; subsoil, heavy clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans, with seeds. The area is 2,368 acres of land, 24 of water, 1,489 of tidal water and 1,532 of foreshore; rateable value, £2,501; the population in 1901 was 295.

Binney is half a mile east; Slough, half a mile north-west; Bells, three-quarters of a mile north on the Thames; Aviary, three-quarters of a mile north-east; Dagenham, 1 mile west; Newhall Furland, half a mile south-west.

This parish is included in the Stoke United District School Board.

Board School, opened in 1876, for 247 children; average attendance, 216.
