Historical Description

AYLESFORD is a parish and village, pleasantly situated in a valley on the north bank of the navigable Medway, at the foot of the chalk scarp, with a station on the North Kent (South Eastern and Chatham) railway, 32 ½ miles from London by road, 3 north-west from Maidstone and 6 south-west from Rochester, giving name to the lathe of Aylesford, in the Mid or Medway division of the county, Mailing union, Maidstone county court district, Aylesford hundred, Mailing petty sessional division and rural deanery of Cobham and archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester; it is a place of very ancient date, deriving its name from Eigil, the hero archer, and from the ford which once existed here across the Medway, now spanned by an ancient stone bridge of six arches, and the only one crossing this stream between Rochester and Maidstone. This place gives the title of earl to a branch of the Finch family. The village is supplied with water from a spring at Tottington; the original cost of conveyance was defrayed by the late E. L. Betts esq. and there are hydrants in various parts of the village, erected and provided with hose by the late H. A. Brassey esq. M.P. The church of St. Peter is of flint and stone, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, with some portions of Norman work, and has a tower containing a clock and 8 bells: there are ancient and costly monuments to the Colpeppers, Rycauts and Milners, a memorial to Sir John Banks bart. of London, 1699, two brasses and a number of stained windows: the tower was completely restored and 3 new bells added in 1885, at a cost of upwards of £1,000; the church was restored in 1878 and affords 550 sittings, 300 being free; in 1876 the churchyard was enlarged. The register dates from the year 1653 and contains many entries of marriages performed at Cossington by George Duke esq. one of the justices of the peace within the county between the years 1653 and 1657; the parish accounts date from 1608. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value, £490, and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Rochester, and held since 1902 by the Rev. Arthur John Webster Thorndike M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge.

The Pottery school-room is also used on Sundays for public worship, and there is a Wesleyan chapel. Here are almshouses for a warden and ten poor persons, endowed in 1605 by the will of John Sedley esq. and restored by an Order in Chancery in 1841, and an additional inmate is now supported from the fund of Sedley’s, Savage’s and Faunce’s charities; each inmate receives 7s. weekly and the warden 9s.: the aggregate income of the charity is now (1902) about £260 yearly, Mrs. Brassey and family having in 1892 added a wing of four dwellings, endowed with £100 a year as a memorial to the late Mr. Brassey. The Literary Institution was renovated in 1865 at a cost of about £3,000, defrayed by the late E. L. Betts esq. Here are large brick and pottery works, established by the late Mr. E. L. Betts, which afford employment to many of the inhabitants, and there are also brick, lime and cement works. Roman and other relics have been collected on this spot, and are now in the Maidstone Museum. The battle, fought here, it is believed, about A.D. 455 between the Britons and the Saxons and in which both Catigern and Horsa were killed, struck the keynote of the whole English conquest of Britain; here also Edmund Ironside A.D. 1016, desisted from his pursuit of the Danes under Canute. The parish is also remarkable for its pre-Roman remains; one of these, a cromlech, named Kits Coty House, stands near the main road, between Rochester and Maidstone. On Blue Bell Hill, ancient military infrenchments are still clearly traceable, and near Aylesford, is a confused heap of stones partly overgrown by trees, and now called “The Countless Stones,” but once forming an ancient pre-historic building; in a field adjoining the Tottington farm many large stones of a like description are lying dispersed, as well as at the bottom of the pond upon the same farm; and at a few yards distance lies a solitary flat stone of huge dimensions, which from its shape is called “The Coffin.” Preston Hall, now the property and residence of Henry Leonard Campbell Brassey esq. J.P. was erected by the late E. L. Betts esq. on a site not far distant from the old mansion, and has a park of 200 acres; near the old house there still stands, an ancient bam with the letters “T. C.” and a date. The Friars, now the property of the Earl of Aylesford, and occupied by Mrs. and Miss Hunter, is the site of the first foundation in England of Carmelite Friars, brought over by Richard de Grey, of Codnor, in 1240, on his return from the Holy Land, of the original buildings many interesting portions still remain.

Cossington, now a farmhouse, gave both residence and surname to the knightly family of Cosenton. H. L. C. Brassey esq. is lord of the manors of Aylesford, Eccles, Tottington and Cossington. The soil is chalk, day and gravel; subsoil, clay and stone. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley, hops, oats and potatoes. The area is 4,051 acres of land, 5 of water, 22 of tidal water and 23 of foreshore; rateable value, £15,785; the population in 1901 was 2,678.

Herne Pound, 5 miles south-west, is partly in this parish, though chiefly in that of Mereworth; it has an area of 441 acres, and belongs to the Dean and Chapter of Rochester and Viscount Falmouth.

By Local Government Board Order 21,672, dated March 24, 1888, three detached parts of Burham parish, including Forstal and Nicopits, were transferred to Aylesford, and by the same Order and at the same date a detached part of Aylesford was added to Mereworth.
