Historical Description
Barham Downs, which extend in length about four miles. On the left is a beautiful vale, which contains several pleasant villages and gentlemen's seats; the views to the right are not quite so open, but, on ascending the eminence, the prospects are equally diversified, and more extensive. Horse-races are held annually on this elevated tract, and are attended by a numerous company.
On these Downs is the site of an ancient camp, which some conjecture to be the work of Julius Caesar, on his second expedition to this island.— There are, also, many other vestiges of ancient encampments. Dr. Stukely, in his Itinerarium Curiosum, says, "To Dover from Canterbury the Watling-street is still the common way : it is left entire over Barham Down, with a high ridge, straight pointing to Canterbury cathedral-tower; as soon as it enters the Down, it traverses a group of Celtic barrows, then leaves a small camp of Caesar's further on; it has been enclosed by several fields, and levelled with ploughing: then it passes by a single barrow, whereon stood a mill, which is now removed higher up; then it ascends the hill to a hedge corner, where are three barrows, a great one between two little ones, all enclosed with a double square entrenchment, of no great bulk; I fancy them Roman, because parallel to and close by the Roman road; the great barrow has a cavity at top, and an entrance eastward, whether casually or with a design 1 know not. At Lyddon, the Watling-street fails into that noble valley of Dover, made of huge ridges of chalk, which divide themselves into lesser valleys, dropping into the great one, at regular distances, as the little leaves of plants, meet at the main stem. This valley, when viewed from the end, looks like a landscape, or scenes lessening according to perspective to Dover, between the two phari and the sea at the end, enclosed between them. The street slides along' the northern declivity, crosses the rivulet, which wandering through the midst of the valley at Buckland, so to Biggingate, where is its termination by the side of the Old Port, having now run from Chester, almost two hundred and fifty miles. Many barrows are on the sides of these hills." Some of these barrows have been since opened, and many valuable relics of antiquity were found, some of which were of pure gold.
In the year 1213, King John encamped on Barham Downs, with an army of sixty thousand men, to oppose the French, who threatened him with an invasion. Simon Montfort, Earl of Leicester, also drew up a large army here, in the reign of Henry From the north end of the Downs, we descend into the village of Bridge. This place took its name from a bridge over a branch of the Stour, which runs through it. The parish was so considerable in ancient times, as to give name both to the hundred and deanery in which it is situated.
BARHAM is a parish, delightfully situated on the Dover road, with a station on the South Eastern Railway Company’s Elham Valley branch from Folkestone (via Shorncliffe) to Canterbury, is 6 miles south-east from Canterbury, 9 north-west from Dover, 4 south-south-west from Adisham station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, in the Eastern division of the county, Kinghamford hundred, lathe of St. Augustine, Wingham petty sessional division, Bridge union, Canterbury county court district, rural deanery of East Bridge, and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient building of flint and rubble, chiefly in the Decorated style, with portions of Early English and Perpendicular work, and has a western tower with spire, containing 4 bells and a clock; the church was restored in 1886, at a cost of £2,000; there are several stained windows, and about 450 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living was declared a rectory March 1, 1867, net yearly value £278, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1896 by the Rev. James Alcock M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. The living was formerly attached to Bishopsbourne but was separated by an Order in Council in 1846. Barham Downs have many remains of entrenchments and barrows. On Breach Down, 1 mile south-west, are a number of tumuli, in which many skeletons have been found; one of these had round its neck a string of beads of various forms and sizes-and close by it lay a sword, dagger and spear. The late Mr. Fausset, of Heppington, opened upwards of 300 barrows and obtained from them numerous coins. The Roman Watling Street, from Canterbury to Dover, passes along the lower side of the downs. Matthew Bell esq. of Bourne Park, Bishopsbourne, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Sir Percy Dixwell Nowell Dixwell-Oxenden bart. and George E. Dering esq. of Lockleys, Welwyn, Herts. Broome Park, a mile and a quarter long and containing about 500 acres, is the property of Sir P. D. N. Dixwell-Oxenden bart. and at present unoccupied.
