Historical Description

BEARSTED is a village and parish, and head of a petty sessional division (meetings held at Maidstone), and is on the road from Ashford to Maidstone, with a station on the Maidstone and Ashford branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and is 2 ½ miles east from Maidstone, and 45 from London, in the Mid division of the county, Eyhorne hundred, lathe of Aylesford, Maidstone union and county court district, rural deanery of Sutton and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of the Holy Cross is of stone, chiefly in the Early English slyle, and has a tower of Rectilinear date, containing 6 bells: several of the windows are stained, and there are a number of monuments; the church has been restored at different times since 1863, and affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £160, with 23 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Rochester. Milgate Park, one mile south-east, is the seat of Walter Thomas Fremlin esq.; the park extends over 250 acres. C. P. Wykeham-Martin esq. of Leeds Castle, the Earl of Romney and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners are the reputed lords of the manor. The Lushington family, Walter T. Fremlin esq. the Earl of Romney and Mrs. Louisa I. Whatman, of Vinters, Bosley, are the principal landowners. The soil is, in part of the parish, a sandy loam and in other parts a strong clay; subsoil, the same; about 150 acres are planted with fruit. The area is 572 acres; rateable value, £3,206; the population in 1901 was 726 in the civil and 745 in the ecclesiastical parish.

By Local Government Board Order 20,930, dated March 24, 1889, Chrismell Farm and Milgate House and Cottages were transferred from Bearsted to Thornham for civil purposes.

Cross Keys is a quarter of a mile east; Rose Acre Street, about a mile west.

National School (mixed), built in 1839, for 130 children; average attendance, 103.
