Historical Description

BENENDEN is a pleasant village and parish, on the road from Cranbrook to Tenterden, 8 miles south from Staplehui'st station on the Tunbridge and Ashford section, the same distance north-east from Etchingham station on the Tunbridge and Hastings branch, and 4 south-east from Cranbrook station on the Hawkhurst branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 5 ½ west from Tenterden and 50 from London. The parish is in the Southern division of the county, Cranbrook, Rolvenden and Selbrittenden hundreds, lower division of the lathe of Scray, Cranbrook petty sessional division and union, Tenterden county court district and in the rural deanery of West Charing and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. George is of stone, in the Gothic style, and has a tower containing a clock with chimes and 8 bells.; there are a number of memorial and other stained windows, and several monuments to the Hodges and Norris families, and an ancient brass to Edmond Grybbon esq. founder of the Free school: the church was restored in 1861—2, and affords 600 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £213, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Cranbrook, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Arthur Giles Daubeney M.A. of Magdalen College, Oxford. Here is a small Congregational chapel, and at Iden Green is a Mission room. A fair is held on the 15th May, for cattle. St. George’s Club, erected at the expense of the Earl of Cranbrook, and opened in November, 1881, has reading rooms and a library of 300 volumes. There are several charities in the parish, amounting to £50 yearly, arising from land and money invested in Consols, left by Dr. Curteis and others and distributed in bread and money. Hemsted Park is the seat of the Right Hon. the Earl of Cranbrook G.C.S.I., P.C., D.C.L., D.L., J.P.: the mansion is an elegant structure of red brick, with Bath stone dressings, in the Elizabethan style, and was erected in 1861, on an eminence in a spacious, and well-wooded park of 300 acres, and near the site of an ancient house of the same name, once occupied by the Guldeford family; the south and east fronts are beautifully laid out with terraces and pleasure gardens. The Earl of Cranbrook is lord of the manor and owner of the greater part of the parish. The soil is clay and loam, producing good wheat and beans. Hops are also extensively grown here. The area is 6,685 acres of land and 8 of water; rateable value, £6,451; the population in 1901 was 1,336.

Endowed (boys), founded by Edmond Gybbon esq. of the Hole, Rolvenden, in 1609, for 80 boys; average attendance, 56; the annual endowment amounts to £80 & is derived from the rents of farms.

National (mixed), erected by the Earl of Cranbrook in 1861, for upwards of 200 children; average attendance, 110.

East End, erected, with mistress’s house, by the Earl of Cranbrook in 1872, on a site given by him, for 100 children; average attendance, 54.

Infants’ school, also erected by Lord Cranbrook in 1892, for about 90 children; average attendance, 51.
