The extensive common appertaining to this parish has been recently enclosed, and several substantial houses are erected on different spots, which are exposed to the bleakest winds of winter, but command rich and variegated prospects.
BEXLEY, anciently “Bekesley” and “Bixle,” is a large parish and village, with a station on the ‘North Kent section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway and one also at Halfway Street and Crayford on the same line; Bexley is 3 miles west from Dartford and 12 from London, in the North Western division of the county, lathe of Sutton-at-Home, hundred of Ruxley, Dartford union, petty sessional division and county court district, and in the rural deanery of East Dartford, archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury, and jurisdiction of the Metropolitan Police. The river Cray crosses the centre of the village in its course to Crayford. The parish is governed by a District Council under the Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), originally a Local Board, formed in 1880. In 1902 East Wickham was added to the Urban District. Bexley is lighted with gas by the West Kent Gas Company and supplied with water from the Kent Water Works, both at Crayford. This place gave the title of baron (1 March, 1823), to the Right Hon.
