Historical Description

The small town of Bidenden. It has at present many respectable inhabitants, though the clothing manufacture, which first occasioned the increase of the population of this part of the county, in the reign of Edward III, when the Flemings first introduced it, has for many years failed here; yet several good houses still remaining discover the prosperity of the former inhabitants.

The Church is a handsome regular building, standing on an eminence at the west end of the village, and contains several ancient monumental brasses. A free-grammar school, now much neglected, was founded here in the year 1522. Two maiden-sisters left some land in this parish, for the benefit of the poor, the profits of which are expended in bread, distributed to the poor on Easter-Sunday. The figures of two females are impressed on the cakes.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BIDDENDEN is a parish and village, on the road from Tenterden to Maidstone, 4 miles south from Head-corn station on the Tonbridge and Ashford section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 49 from London, 5 north-west from Tenterden and 13 south-east from Maidstone, in the Southern division of the county, lower division of Scray lathe, Barkley and Cranbrook hundreds, Cranbrook petty sessional division, Tenterden union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of West Charing, and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of All Saints is of stone in the Early English and later styles, and has a tower in the Perpendicular style, containing a clock and 8 bells; there are several tombs and monuments and numerous brasses of an early period, and marble tablets; the east window and two smaller ones are stained; the church was restored and reseated in 1857, and affords 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £396, with 14 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Ernest Kennedy Buckley Morgan M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Particular Baptist chapel, Headcorn road, was erected in 1879. Attached to this parish is a benefaction of great celebrity and to which a singular tradition is attached; a farm of 23 acres was left by two sisters, Eliza and Mary Chuckhurst, called the “Biddenden Maids,” who were supposed to have been born joined together by the hips and shoulders and who died at the age of 34, within six hours of each other; from the proceeds of this farm about 500 loaves and a portion of cheese are distributed on Easter Sunday and the following Tuesday among the poor of the parish; and in order to preserve the memory of the above tradition, a quantity of small flat cakes, made only of flour and water, bearing the impression of the two sisters, united as above related, are also given to those who may apply for them. The country west of Biddenden is dotted over with numerous small ponds. A cattle fair is held on November 8th.

Dashmonden is the residence of William Boys Tylden-Pattenson D.L., J.P. and Randolphs of Thomas P. Jones esq. The Earl of Cranbrook, who is lord of the manor, W. B. Tylden-Pattenson esq. Fiennes Stanley Wykeham Cornwallis esq. of Linton Park and G. B. Pinyon esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay. The land is chiefly pasture, but hops, wheat, oats, beans and peas are grown. The area is 7,180 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £5,434; the population in 1901 was 1,058.

National Endowed School (mixed), now incorporated with a school for boys, founded in 1522 by John Mayne & endowed by him with the sum of £20 3s. 4d. derived from three farms lying in the parishes of Biddenden, Tenterden & Bethersden; the present schools, for 250 children, include a residence for the master & mistress; average attendance, 142.
