Historical Description

BIRLING is a parish and village, at the foot of the chalk hills, 2 miles north-east from Mailing station on the Swanley Junction and Maidstone section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 2 south-west from Snodland station on the North Kent line, 8 south-west from Rochester and 7 north-west from Maidstone, in the Mid division of the county, Aylesford lathe, Larkfield hundred, Mailing petty sessional division and union, Maidstone county court district, rural deanery of North Mailing, and archdeaconry of Maidstone. Birling is watered by a small stream rising near Birling Place, and flows into the Medway. The church of All Saints is a building of Kentish rag, principally Perpendicular in style, and has a tower containing a clock and 8 bells, and several stained windows, as well as memorials of the Nevill family: the church affords upwards of 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £153, including residence and 16 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Marquess of Abergavenny K.G. and held since 1896 by the Rev. Theodore Augustus Eden Williamson M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. Christ Church, a chapel of ease, at Lower Birling, erected in 1893, is in the Early English style. The site and burial ground were given by the Rev. Canon Coulson M.A. of Guildford. Birling Manor, the residence of the Hon. Ralph Pelham Nevill D.L., J.P. (lord of the manor and principal landowner), is an extensive mansion, in a modern Gothic style, with grounds of about 70 acres. The Marquess of Abergavenny is also a landowner. The soil is various, sand, clay and gravel; subsoil, stone and gravel. The area is 1,917 acres of land, a large proportion of which is devoted to the cultivation of hops, and 3 of water; assessable value, £2,760; the population in 1901 was 894 in the civil and 1,897 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Layland is three-quarters of a mile north-east.

Hamhill is also in the parish, 1 mile east from the parish church.
