Historical Description

BLEAN (or Sts. Cosmus and Damian-in-the-Blean) is a parish and head of a union, in a wild country, enveloped by woods and environed by large tracts of rough land. The centre of the parish is 3 miles north-west from Canterbury. The high road from Canterbury to Whitstable skirts the western side of the parish, which has no village properly so called, but contains a large and scattered population; it is in the Eastern division of the county, lathe of St. Augustine, hundred of Whitstable, Canterbury petty sessional division and county court district, and in the rural deanery and archdeaconry of Canterbury. A brook flows past the church. The church of Sts. Cosmus and Damian is of flint, in the Early English style, and contains several monuments; it was restored and re-seated in 1866, and has a bell gable containing one bell: there are 273 sittings. The register dates from the year 1553. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £317, with half-an-acre of glebe, in the gift of the master of Eastbridge Hospital, Canterbury, and held since 1863 by the Rev. George William Temple M.A. and late fellow of Clare College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel here and a Baptist chapel at Tyler Hill. The charities include one of £2 10s. yearly, left in 1820, by Mrs. Leggett, of Blean, for bread; and Wootton's, of £6 10s. left, in 1841, by Richard Charles Harris Wootton, of Blean, for the repair of his tomb, the surplus to be distributed annually in calico and flannel. The Master of Eastbridge Hospital is lord of the manor; James Fleet esq. Lieut.-Col. Charles Hamilton Trueman and Mrs. de Chair Baker are the largest landowners. The soil is light loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and hops. The area is 2,334 acres; rateable value, £3,802; the population in 1901 was 611.

Tyler Hill, mostly in St. Stephen’s parish, is 2 miles east.

National School, erected in 1864, enlarged in 1872 & again in 1884, for 140 children; average attendance, 74.

The Union cortiprises the following parishes:-Archbishop's Palace, Blean, Chislet, Christchurch, Herne, Herne Bay, Hoath Reculver, St. Dunstan Within, St. Dunstan Without, St. Gregory, St. Stephen or Hackington, Staplegate, Sturry, Swalecliffe, Westbere, Whitstable Urban & Whitstable-cum-Seasalter. The population of the union in 1901 was 24,548; acreage, 28,835 , rateable value, in 1901, £154,539.
