Historical Description

BOXLEY is a parish, and village, on the slope of the chalk range, 2 ½ miles north-east from Maidstone, the nearest station on, the South Eastern and Chatham railway, in the Mid division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, Maidstone hundred and county court district, Bearsted petty sessional division, Hollingbourn union, rural deanery of Sutton and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The parish is watered by a tributary of the Medway. The church of the Blessed Virgin and All Saints is of rag stone, chiefly in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, and has a tower containing a clock and 6 bells: the east window and others are stained; the church contains some interesting monuments, and was repaired about 1876; there are 300 sittings, of which about half are free. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £400, with 5 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Rochester, and held since 1896 by the Rev. William Snape Cadman M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The charities include Burville’s of £1 7s. 6d. and Kember’s of £1 6s. which are given to the coal club; of the interest on Hunt’s benefaction of £200, half is given to the school and half to aged persons on St. Thomas’ day; Rev. J. Griffiths D.D. bequeathed £500 in Consols, the interest of which is given in clothes at Christmas to day school children. Bosley Abbey, a religious house of the Cistercian order, stood three-quarters of a mile west-south-west; it was founded in 1146 by William de Ypres, Earl of Kent, and dedicated to St. Mary and the Rood of Grace; some remains still exist. Penenden Heath famous as a place for holding county meetings, is chiefly within this parish; some part of it has been brought into cultivation and the remainder has been converted into a recreation ground for the borough of Maidstone. Vinters, a handsome mansion, standing in an extensive park of 186 acres, 1 mile east from Maidstone, is the seat of Mrs. Whatman. Park House is the residence of Major Mawdistly Gaussen Best J.P. The Earl of Romney, who is lord of the manor, Major M. G. Best, Miss Lushington, of Park House, Sandling, the trustees of the late Albert Frederick Style esq. and Mrs. Whatman are the principal landowners. The soil is various, chalk, sand, rag stone and gravel. The chief crops are fruit, hops and corn. The area is 5,761 acres of land and 25 of water; rateable value, £12,166; the population in 1901 was 1,490.

Weavering Street and Grove Green are 2 miles south and the latter has a school mission church; the services are conducted by the Rev. Charles Edmund Waller Dalison M.A.

Dun Street, 2 ½ miles north-east, is ecclesiastically in the parish of Bredhurst. Letters are received through Bredhurst, Chatham.
