Historical Description

bout seven miles from Hithe, on the right of our road, is the parish of Braborne, formerly noted for a numerous breed of rabbits, of a superior quality. On this heath extensive barracks were built, at a great, and, as it is said, at an extravagant expense, early in the late war. These ill-placed and costly buildings are now taken down, and corn grows upon their site. A fair is held in the village, on the last day of May, for pedlary and toys.

Braborne Church is a handsome building, consisting of two aisles and two chancels, with a square tower-steeple at the west end. This church contains many ancient monuments and memorials; and there was, in the seventeenth century, a superannuated yew tree growing in the churchyard, which was 58 feet 11 inches in circumference.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BRABOURNE is a village and parish, deriving its name from the bourne or rivulet rising in it, and is at the foot of the chalk downs called “the backbone of Kent, ’’ 2 ½ miles north-east from Smeeth station on the main line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway to Folkestone and Dover, and 6 ½ east from Ashford: the parish is in the Southern division of the county, and partly in the hundred of Bircholt Barony, lathe of Scray, and partly in Wye hundred, lathe of Shepway, East Ashford union, Ashford county court district and petty sessional division, and in the rural deanery of North Lympne and archdeaconry of Canterbury. This place has given the title of baron to the Knatchbull-Hugessen family. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone, in-the Norman and Early English styles, and has a tower containing 5 bells: there are numerous monuments to the Scott family, some brasses and several stained windows, one of which contains some remains of very early glass: the church affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, consolidated with the rectory of Monks Horton, net yearly value £350, with 21 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Alfred Farbrother M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Here is a Baptist chapel, built in 1818 and enlarged in 1839. The charities in 1897 amounted to £5 10s. 4d. and are derived from the rent of 25 acres of land in Rommey Marsh, left in 1550 by William Fordred, and distributed to the poor in money. Knott’s charity of 8s. a year is charged on a farm in the parish of Bonnington and is also distributed to the poor. Lord Brabourne, who is lord of the manor, Sir Wyndham Knatchbull bart. J.P. of Mersham Hatch, and G. C. Swindells esq. of Horton Park, Hythe, are the principal landowners. The soil is chiefly chalk, loam and sand; subsoil, chalk and clay. The chief crops are wheat, hops, beans and peas. The area is 3,524 acres of land and 4 of water; rateable value, £3,862; the population in 1901 was 622.

East Brabourne is a quarter of a mile south-east; West Brabourne, 1 ½ west; Bulltown Comer, 1 ½ north-west; Brabourne Lees, 1 ¾ south-west.
