Historical Description

BRASTED (or Brastead) is a village and parish on the high road from Sevenoaks to Westerham, in the valley of the Upper Darent and at the foot of the chalk scarp, with a station on the branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway from Dunton Green to Westerham, 4 ½ miles west from Sevenoaks, a mile and half east from Westerham and 19 ½ from London; the parish is in the Western division of the county, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Brasted and Somerden hundreds, Sevenoaks petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Shoreham, archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury. The church of St. Martin, entirely rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1880, is of Kentish ragstone, and has a tower containing 6 bells: there are tombs and monuments to the Heath and Turton families: the tower was restored in 1882 and the bells recast and re-hung, at a cost of about £1,400: the church affords 550 sittings. The register dates from the year 1557. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £600, with 74 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1878 by the Rev. James William Rynd M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There is a Baptist chapel here, and mission rooms in connection with it at French street, South street and Brasted Chart. The Village Hall was erected in 1897, at a cost of about £1,700, by Mrs. Tipping, of Mathern palace, Chepstow, to the memory of her late husband, and will seat about 200 persons. The charities are as follows:-(1) William Newman in 1736 left a sum invested in Consols, now amounting to £1,002 8s. 6d. and producing £27 11s. 4d. yearly. (2) Mrs. Elizabeth Minet in 1832 left a sum invested in Consols, now amounting to £179 17s. 3d. which produces £4 18s. 8d. yearly. (3) Mrs. Crane, alias Elizabeth Smith in 1638 left two-thirds of a moiety of No. 17 Gresham street, London, now producing £60 per annum. All these charities are distributed by the Parish Council in accordance with a scheme framed by the Charity Commissioners. Brasted Place is the seat of Col. William Fearon Tipping J.P.: the house stands in a beautifully wooded park of 100 acres adjoining the village. The principal landowners are Earl Stanhope, who is lord of the manor, Col. W. F. Tipping, Charles Hoskins Master esq. of Barrow Green, Surrey, Col. George Henderson and Norman Watney esq. of Valence, Westerham. The soil is mostly loam; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are hops, wheat and oats. The area is 4,430 acres of land and 13 of water; assessable value, £7,310; the population in 1901 was 1,304 in the civil and 1,111 in the ecclesiastical parish.
