The church of St. John the Baptist is of flint and stone, in the Perpendicular style, and has a western tower containing a clock and 5 bells: there are two brasses: the church was partially restored in 1894, and affords 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £140, with 1 ½ acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Robert Douglas M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1868, with 250 sittings, 50 being free.

The college of the Holy Trinity here, founded by R. de Bredgare, is now called “The Chauntry.”

William Thatcher, of London, in 1718 left £100 to be invested in land for the teaching of eight poor children, instruction in the Church catechism being particularly specified; this land was subsequently exchanged with the late Lord Kingsdown (d. 1867) for lands now (1902) producing £130 yearly, 4/5 of which are appropriated to educational purposes and 1/5 to the poor; other charities of £4 10s. yearly are expended in fuel for the poor. The trustees of the late Baroness Wenman (d. 9 Aug. 1870) are lords of the manor. Mr. Charles Edward Homewood, Sir Edward Leigh-Pemberton K.C.B. T. H. Brenchley esq. of Glancirw, Cardiganshire, John Seager, Daniel S. Easton esq. and the trustees of the lata George Smeed are the principal landowners. The soil is moderately stiff, with a mixture of flint stone; subsoil, heavy clay. The chief crops are hops, fruit, barley and wheat. The area is 1,762 acres; rateable value, £2,564; the population in 1901 was 498.

Bexon (or Baxton) is one mile south-east; Swanton Street three-quarters of a mile south; Silver Street a quarter of a mile west; Dean’s Hill one mile west.

National School (mixed), built in 1868, for 150 children; average attendance, 125; it is supported partly by Thatcher’s charity.
