Historical Description

BRENCHLEY is a village and large parish near the river Teise, 2 ½ miles south-east from Paddock Wood Junction station and 2 north-west from Horsmonden station, both on the Paddock Wood and Hawkhurst branch of the South Eastern, and Chatham railway, 7 ½ north-east from Tunbridge Wells and 36 from London, in the South Western division of the county, Brenchley and Horsmonden hundred, lathe of Aylesford, Tonbridge petty sessional division and union, Tunbridge Wells county court district, and in the rural deanery of South Mailing and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of All Saints is of stone, in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, and has a tower containing 6 bells and a clock with chimes, placed in 1886, at a cost of £300: the church affords 850 sittings: in the churchyard is a remarkably fine avenue of yew trees leading up to the north porch. The register dates, from the year 1539. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £560, with residence and 5 acres of glebe, in the gift of George John Courthope esq. and held since 1901 by the Rev. Frederic La Trobe Foster M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Tectorial tithes are commuted at £732 7s. There are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels. The charities amount to £17 yearly, which sum is expended in fuel and clothing. A holiday home, in connection with the Ragged School Union, was opened here in 1886, and is supported by voluntary contributions. Moatlands, the property and residence of Edward Beanes esq. is a castellated mansion, dating from 1524, with flat roof added in 1882: an old oak drawbridge was discovered in the moat on its being cleaned out in 1860. The Knowle is the residence of George W. Forrest esq. C.I.E. The manorial Tights, are divided. Viscount Falmouth D.L., George John Courthope esq. of Whiligh, Sussex, and Edward Beanes esq. are the chief landowners, and there are many small landowners. The soil is chiefly loam, with sandstone. Hops and fruit are extensively grown. The area of the whole parish is 7,785 acres of land and 19 of water; rateable value, £21,198; and the population, including Paddock Wood district, in 1901 was 3,784. The population attached to the parish church in 1902 was 1,522.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 11 May, 18801 T. Else, Paddock Wood, clerk to the board; S. Dann, attendance officer.

National School, built in 1842, for 347 children; average attendance, 111 boys, 122 girls & 107 infants.
