Historical Description
NEW BROMPTON is an increasing town in the parish of Gillingham, 1 mile east from Chatham, with a station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, which passes under Chatham lines by a tunnel four furlongs in length; it is in the Mid division of the county, Chatham and Gillingham hundred, lathe of Aylesford, Medway union, Gillingham Urban District, Rochester petty sessional division and county court district, and in the rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester, and adjoins Chatham lines, an open area of hilly ground used by the military, and to which the public have free access: the place is supplied with water by the Brompton, Chatham, Gillingham and Rochester Water Works Company, and lighted with gas by the Rochester Gas Company, and also partly by electric light, and is governed by the Gillingham District Council, who erected the bridge over the railway. The ecclesiastical parish of St. Mark was formed Sept. 15, 1863: the church, in the High street, is in the Early English style, and affords 800 sittings. The register dates from the year 1866. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £286, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Gillingham, and held since 1872 by the Rev. Richard Morris, of Trinity College, Dublin. The mission church of St. Luke in connection with St. Mark’s, was erected in 1891, and will seat 250 persons. The ecclesiastical parish of St. Barnabas was formed in 1892 from the civil parish of Gillingham; the church, consecrated in June, 1890, is in the Early English style: in August, 1902, a reredos was erected to the memory of the Rev. Cyrus Steel, first vicar of St. Barnabas; it is built principally of Caen stone and Irish marble, in the Gothic style of the thirteenth century, and cost £500, raised by subscription: the church has sittings for 700 persons. The register dates from the year 1890. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £150, without residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Rochester, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Henry Colborn A.K.C.L. The Catholic Church of Our Lady of Gillingham, in Station road, built in 1893 and enlarged in 1901, will seat 300 persons. There are also Baptist, Congregational, Wesleyan, Free Methodist, and Bible Christian chapels, a National Scotch church, and a Meeting house for the Plymouah Brethren. The Technical Institute in Gardiner street was built in 1893; classes for technical instruction are held here in the evening. The Public Hall in High street was erected in 1876: the large hall will hold 500 persons. The Police Station in Jeffrey street, built in 1889, comprises a magistrates’ room, a residence for an inspector, lock-up keeper, and 10 constables, and 8 cells. The area is 524 acres; the population in 1891 was 12,087, and in 1901, 18,980.

OLD BROMPTON is an ecclesiastical parish, formed Jan. 19, 1830, out of the parishes of Chatham and Gillingham, adjoining Chatham and comprising some of the military works, and is in the Mid division of the county, Chatham and Gillingham hundred, lathe of Aylesford, Medway union, Gillingham Urban District, Rochester petty sessional division and county court district, and rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester. It is supplied with water by the Chatham, Gillingham and Rochester Water Works Company, and lighted with gas by the Rochester Gas Company. The church of the Holy Trinity, erected in 1848, is in the Early English style, and has a tower with spire, containing a clock and one bell: in the chancel is a memorial window to Dr. Henry Weekes, of this parish: the church affords 1,000 sittings, 240 being free. The register dates from the year 1847. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £600, with residence, in the gift of Hyndrpan’s trustees, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Archibald Harry Wood B.A. of the University of London. The Catholic chapel, dedicated to St. Paulinus, has 400 sittings. The Wesleyan Garrison church, built in 1893, at a cost of £5,200, is in the Gothic style, and will seat 600 persons. The Conway Memorial Hall, adjoining Trinity church, and built in 1889, is used for concerts and entertainments: and will seat about 350 persons. Chatham lines extend into this parish and the school of military engineering and barracks are also in the parish. The area is 212 acres; the population in 1901 was 5,787, including the school of military engineering.
