Historical Description

BURHAM is a parish and is on the east bank of the navigable Medway and at the foot of the chalk range, one mile and a half east from Snodland station on the North Kent line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway on the opposite bank of the river, 5 miles north-west from Maidstone and the same distance south from Rochester, in the Mid division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, Larkfield hundred, Mailing petty sessional division and union, Rochester county court district, rural deanery of Cobham, and archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester. The old church of the Blessed Virgin, an ancient building of stone in various styles, with a low square tower, was repaired in 1890, and re-opened: the new church, erected at a cost of £4,500, is in the Decorated style, and has a central tower containing 3 bells removed from the old church: there are 360 sittings. The register dates from the year 1600. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £270, with residence (erected in 1865), in the gift of Lord Ashcombe, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Alfred Ernest Bourne B.A. of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. The Aylesford brick, tile and pottery works are partly in this parish. The Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers (1900) Ltd. Messrs Margetts and Henry Peters esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is chalky; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley and hops. The area is 1,633 acres of land, 3 of water, 13 of tidal water and 16 of foreshore; rateable value, £8,245; the population in 1901 was 1,687 in the civil and 1,725 in the ecclesiastical parish.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 13 July, 1875; S. Wagon, Aylesford, clerk to the board; Jas. Barrows, attendance officer.
