Historical Description
BURMARSH is a parish extending to the sea shore, 5 miles south-west from Hythe station on the Sandgate branch and 5 south from Smeeth station on the Ashford and Dover section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 5 north from New Romney, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Worth lathe of Shepway, liberty and union of Romney Marsh, petty sessional division of Dymchurch, New Romney county court district, and in the rural deanery of North Lympne and archdeaconry of Canterbury. In 1888, by Local Government Board Order 22,337, about one-third of the parish of West Hythe was annexed to this parish, the remainder being added to the borough of Hythe. The church of All Saints is of stone in the Norman style, and has a tower containing 5 bells: the east window is a memorial: there are 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1572. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £150, with residence and 3 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Charles James Oliphant M.A. of St. Mary Hall, Oxford. Sir Henry Nevill Dering bart. C.B. of Surrenden-Dering, who is lord of the manor, Sir John William Honywood bart. of Evington Place, Elmstead, Henry Rigden esq. and Mrs. R. Hills, of New Romney, are the principal landowners. The soil is stiff; subsoil, sand. The chief crops are grass, wheat and beans; turnip seed is also grown. The area is 2,172 acres of land, 4 of water and 31 of foreshore; rateable value, £2,404; the population in 1901 was 172.
