Historical Description

Between Westwell and Lenham is the village of Charing, situated at the foot of Charing Hill, over which the high road leads through it from Faversham, by Smarden and Bidenden, and thence to Cranbrook and Tenterden in the weald.

The archbishops of Canterbury had formerly a palace at Charing, of which considerable ruins remain. These vestiges are now occupied by a farmer, and are thus described in Hasted's History of Kent: "The ancient gateway to it is now standing, and much of the sides of the court within it; at the east side of which seems to have been the dining-room, the walls of which remain, and it is converted into a barn. On the opposite side to this are many of the offices, now made into stables. Fronting the great gateway above-mentioned seems to have been the entrance into the palace, the chief part of which, on the east side is fitted up as a dwelling-house; at the back of which, northward, are the remains of the chapel, the walls of which are standing entire, being built of squared stone, mixed with flints; at the side wall of it are three windows, with pointed arches; and at the east end a much larger one of the same form."

Charing Church is a handsome building, consisting of one aisle and a transept, a high chancel, and one small one on the south side of it. The tower, with a small beacon turret at one corner, is at the west end. In the year 1590, the interior of this church was consumed by fire to the very stones of the building, which happened from a gun discharged at a pigeon, then upon the roof of it.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CHARING is a parish and a small town, at the foot of the chalk scarp, at the junction of the roads from Ashford to Maidstone and Cranbrook to Canterbury, with a station on the Maidstone and Ashford branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 6 miles north-west from Ashford, 13 south-east from Maidstone and 52 from London, in the Southern division of the county, lathe of Scray, hundred of Calehill, Ashford county court district and petty sessional division, West Ashford union, and in the rural deanery of East Sharing, archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury. The town is lighted with gas by a company from works built in 1867. A water supply is now (1902) being laid on; a reservoir and pumping station constructed and a well bored in the chalk scarp north of the town. The church of SS. The Parish Hall, erected in 1897, in commemoration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, at a cost of £620, is a structure of brick, used for public meetings, concerts and entertainments &c. and will seat 300 persons; in rear of it are two reading rooms. A Cemetery of one acre was formed in 1887, at a cost of £600; it is under the control of a Burial Board of 5 members. In 1765, Elizabeth Ludwell, of Charing, left £2,960, now invested in Consols; the interest, amounting to about £86, is distributed to the poor in money and bread by the vicar and churchwardens to 10 persons, each receiving £4 yearly, and towards payment of the schoolmaster’s salary. There are ruins here of an ancient residence of the Archbishops of Canterbury, the gateway of which still remains, and much of the buildings on the sides of the courtyard. Pett Place is the residence of Edward Ascherson esq. The Moat of Lieut.-Col. Stephen Percy Groves D.L., J.P. and Clear Mount of John Sayer esq. M.A., J.P., D.L. John Sayer esq.
