Historical Description

CHART (or Chart-next-Sutton Valence) is a village and parish on the range of hills which overlooks the Weald of Kent to the south between the parishes east and west of Sutton Valence and Boughton Monchelsea, half a mile from the road from Maidstone to Tenterden, 5 south-east from Maidstone, 5 north-west from Head-corn station and 5 north-east from Staplehurst station, both on the Tonbridge and Ashford line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, in the Mid division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, hundred of Eyhorne, Bearsted petty sessional division, Hollingbourn union, Maidstone county court district, rural deanery of Sutton and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. Michael, struck by lightning 23 April, 1778, and rebuilt without a chancel, is of stone, in the Late Decorated style, and has a tower containing a clock and 6 bells; it was re-pewed in 1868, and in 1898 underwent extensive alterations at a cost of about £2,000, and affords 270 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £180, with 8 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Rochester, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Arthur Cecil Stopford Gayer M.A. of Emanuel College, Cambridge: the rectorial tithes, amounting to £670, are held by the Dean and Chapter of Rochester. There are charities of £2 10s. yearly value, arising from land left in 1599 by The Eart of Winchilsea and Nottingham. Mrs. Keays-Young, who is lady of the manor of Norton Court, Sir Robert Marcus Filmer bart. of 22 Lowndes square, London S.W. Herman G. Kleinwort esq. of Boughton Monchelsea, Arthur Miskin esq. the representatives of the late Robert Golding esq. and Edwin H. Chambers esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is stiff clay and loam; and the subsoil of the upper part of the parish is rock and is noted for producing superior golding hops, fruit and cob nuts. The chief crops are hops, fruit and corn. The area is 2,183 acres of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £3,731; and the population in 1901 was 643.
