Historical Description

CHELSFIELD is a small parish and pretty village, in a rural neighbourhood to the east of the high road from Sevenoaks to London, and has a station 1 mile west from the village on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 16 ½ miles from London, 8 north from Sevenoaks and 7 ½ south-east from Bromley; it is in the Western division of the county, hundred of Ruxley, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Bromley petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of West Dartford and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. Mary is of flint and stone in the Early English style, and has a tower with spire, containing 5 bells; there is a trass to Robert le Brun, priest, 1417, another of the 15th century, and several tombs: the church affords 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £500, with residence and 12 ¾ acres of glebe, in the gift of All Souls College, Oxford, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Joseph Jeremiah Baddeley M.A. and L.Th of Durham University. There are Wesleyan and Bible Christian chapels, and a Reading Room erected at Pratts Bottom in 1892. The charities amount to £19 8s. yearly, arising from a house and land left in 1608 by Joan Collet, of London, and expended in keeping up the tomb and chapel, the surplus (if any) being applied to the repairs of the church. William Waring esq. who is lord of the manor, Mrs. Harris, Thomas Frederick Burnaby-Atkins esq. of Sevenoaks, the Earl of Derby K.G. A. Miller-Hallet esq. and Edward Norman esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is various; subsoil, mixed. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turnips, beans and peas, and a small quantity of hops: fruit is also grown here. The area is 3,378 acres; rateable value, £6,192; the population in 1901 was 1,522.
