Historical Description

CHERITON is a parish, in a pleasant and picturesque neighbourhood, extending to the shore of the English Channel at Sandgate and Seabrook, and within the parliamentary borough and partly within the municipal borough of Hythe, 1 mile north-west from Sandgate terminal station (at Seabrook) and 1 mile west from Shorncliffe station on the Ashford and Dover section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 2 ½ north-west from Folkestone harbour, 9 west from Dover and 2 ½ north-east from Hythe, in the Eastern division of the county, lathe of Shepway, Elham union and petty sessional division, Folkestone hundred and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Elham, and archdeaconry of Canterbury. It is governed by an Urban District Council of nine members, formed 1st Oct. 1898, by Local Government Board Order, No. 37,899, under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73). A stream flows through the parish to the sea at the Sluice House. The church of St. Martin is an ancient edifice of flint and stone in the Early English style, and has a tower containing 6 bells; there is a fragment of ancient stained glass, three recumbent figures of the 14th century, some brasses and several memorial windows: the church was restored in 1873, and the tower in 1877: there are 350 sittings. A lych gate was erected in 1898. The register dates from the year 1563. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £300, with 7 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Francis D. Brockman esq. and held since 1901 by the Rev. Robert Cecil Salmon M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford. The Cottage Homes here, built by the Elham union in 1888 were enlarged in 1893 for 76 pauper children, and stand in two acres of ground; the boys are educated at Cheriton National school and the girls attend the National school at Newington. A Village hall, built by Jesse Pilcher esq. in 1869 and presented to the parish by his widow in 1873, is used for lectures and meetings; there is also a reading room. A stock sale is held here every Monday. Underhill, the property of F. D. Brockman esq. is at present occupied by Surgeon-Lieut.-Col. Frank H. Hensman. Francis Drake Brockman esq. of Beachborough, Hythe, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The South Eastern Railway Co. are also large holders of land. The soil is light; subsoil, chalky. The chief crops are wheat and barley, lucerne and turnips. The area is 1,159 acres of land and 19 of foreshore; rateable value, £23,311; the population in 1901 was 7,091 of the civil parish, inclusive of 3,748 at the Military Camp, Shorncliffe, and 74 in the Folkestone Workhouse Cottage Homes, and of the ecclesiastical 5,360.

Seabrook and part of Horn Street, was under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act of 1882” (45 & 46 Vict. c. 58), added to Hythe, by Local Government Board Order, 19,009, dated Mar. 25, 1886.

All Souls’, CHERITON STREET, was formed into a separate ecclesiastical parish, under Sir Robert Peel’s Act “New Parishes Act, 1843” (6 & 7 Vict. c. 37), by an Order in Council, dated 18 Aug. 1892, the parish is taken chiefly from St. Martin, Cheriton, with a portion of Folkestone. The church of All Souls, erected in 1894, at a cost of about £4,000, bequeathed for the purpose by the late Mrs. C. Thompson, of Seabrook Vale, is of stone, with a turret containing one bell, and has 351 sittings. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, with residence, in the gift of the Rector of Cheriton, and held since 1901 by the Rev. William Edward Allen M.A. of Lincoln College, Oxford. The Congregational chapel, erected in 1883, is an iron building, and there is a temporary Baptist chapel. The population of All Souls’ in 1901 was 2,816.
