Near the above is a stately tomb, on which are the figures of a man in armour, and a lady in her robes, with their heads resting on cushions. On the south side are three sons, kneeling on cushions; the first in robes, the others in armour; on the north side are five daughters. This tomb was erected for Samson Lennard, Esq. and his wife Margaret Fiennes, sister of Lord Dacre Chevening Place, in this parish, is the seat of the Earl of Stanhope. The house is a substantial and commodious edifice, built, as is said, after a design of Inigo Jones. This building occupies a low situation.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CHEVENING is a parish including the hamlets of Chipstead and Bessels Green, extending in length nearly 6 miles, being very narrow, in the Western division of the county, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, hundred of Codsheath petty sessional division, union and county court district of Sevenoaks, rural deanery of Shoreham, and archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury: the village is pleasantly situated about 3 miles north-west from Sevenoaks and 2 west from Dunton Green junction station on the Tonbridge line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway. The church of St. Botolph is of stone in the Early English and later styles, and has a tower of Perpendicular date, containing 2 bells; there are monuments to the Stanhope family and others, and several stained windows: the church was restored in 1855, at a cost of nearly £1,300; and again in 1890—91, at a total cost of £900, and further in 1901, when it was reseated in oak and the floor lowered to its original level, at a cost of £1,350; it now affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £410, with residence and 23 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Alleyne Hall Hall M.A. of University College, Oxford. There is a charity of about £30 yearly, for apprenticing poor children, derived from money left in 1713 by Rebecca Wyndham, and Katherine Strode of this neighbourhood and now in the hands of the Charity Commissioners. Chevening Place, the seat of Earl Stanhope J.P., F.S.A, lord lieutenant of the county, situated in a delightfully picturesque park of 850 acres, was erected from designs by the famous Inigo Jones. Morant’s Court is the property and residence of John Norton Tonge esq. Earl Amherst, who is lord of the manor, Earl Stanhope, the trustees of George Perkins esq. and John N. Tonge esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is chalky loam;subsoil, gault, clay and lower green sand. The chief crops are oats, cereals and pasture. The area is 3,880 acres of land and 13 of water; assessable value, £5,345; the population in 1901 was 1,074 the civil, and 1,009 in the ecclesiastical parish.
