Historical Description

CHIDDINGSTONE is a village and parish, near the Surrey and Sussex borders, in the Weald, on the river Eden, a mile and a half south-west from Penshurst station (in this parish) on the Redhill and Tonbridge section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 4 miles south-east from Edenbridge, 6 south-west from Tonbridge and 7 south from Sevenoaks, in the South Western division of the county, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Somerden and Ruxley hundreds, union of Sevenoaks, Tonbridge petty sessional division and county court district and in the rural deanery of Tonbridge and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. Mary is of stone in various styles from Early English to late Jacobean, and consists of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, and an embattled western tower of Kentish rag stone, containing a clock and 8 bells: there are hatchments and tablets to the Streatfeild family: the chancel was restored about 1870, and the church in 1898, at an outlay of about £1,000; in 1901 the tower was renovated and the bells rehung at a cost of £1,000, the gift of Mrs. Yates, of Latymers, Penshurst: the church affords 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £544, with 11 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1893 by the Rev. John Thomas Pearse M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The church of St. Luke, at the Causeway, erected in 1898 as a memorial to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Clark Hills and their sons, Frank Ernest and Henry, Is an edifice of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, from designs by Mr. Bentley, architect, and has a tower; it affords sittings for 200 persons. The church has at present no endowment, but the stipend of the curate in charge and the Parsonage House are provided by Arnold F. Hills esq. The Rev. John Frederick-Johnson M.A. of Lincoln College, Oxford, has been in charge since 1901. Divine service is also held in the school-room at the Hoath at 3 p.m. but on the first sunday in the month at 11 a.m. St. Saviour’s iron church is now used as a Village Club room. The charities amount to about £18 yearly, arising from land and cottages left at various times by members of the Streatfeild family and others; this sum is distributed in gifts of money on St. Thomas’ Day and Good Friday to aged widows and parishioners with large families. The mansion of the Streatfeild family, held by them since the year 1500 and now the property of Lieut.-Col. Henry Streatfeild, is occupied by Edward Maynard Denny esq.; in the park stands the old “Chiding Stone,” from which the name of the village and parish is popularly supposed to be derived; its origin is unknown but is supposed to be either a Druidical remain or one of the preaching stones. Stone Wall is the property and residence of Edmund Gustavus Bloomfield Meade-Waldo. esq. Lieut.-Col. Henry Streatfeild, of Hoath Bank, who is lord of the manor, E. G. B. Meade-Waldo esq. Lieut.-Col. Charles Stanley Williams V.D., J.P. of Ivy House, E. M. Denny esq. and Arnold Frank Hills esq. of Woodford Green, Essex, are the principal landowners. The soil is a stiff clay; subsoil, north side of parish, clay, and south side, rock. The chief crops are wheat, beans, oats, peas and hops. The area is 5,935 acres of land and 46 of water; assessable value, £5,761; the population in 1901 was, civil 1,092, ecclesiastical 1,051.
