Historical Description

CHISLET is a parish and village, extending to the sea, and on the old Margate road and the river Stour, one mile north from Grove Ferry station on the Ashford and Ramsgate section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 5 miles south-east from Herne Bay, 6 north-east from Canterbury and 76 from London by Tail, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Bleangate, lathe of St. Augustine, Home petty sessional division, union of Blean, county court district of Canterbury, and in the jural deanery of Westbere and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The river Stour forms part of the boundary of the parish on the south and east, and a small but nameless brook rises near Tile Lodge farm. The church of St. Mary is of flint and stone in the Norman and Early English styles, and has a central tower of Norman character containing 6 bells: the church was restored in 1866, and has 396 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £180, with 3 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1876 by the Rev. Frederick George Haslewood LL.D, of Clare College, Cambridge, and ad eundem D.C.L, of Durham University.

The Mission church of St. John the Evangelist, Marsh Side, was erected in 1879, and there are also Wesleyan and Congregational chapels. The charities amount to about £80 yearly, the principal charity of £50 yearly being derived from a farm left in 1752 by John Taylor esq. The Archbishop of Canterbury is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, the Marquess Conyngham (a minor), and the Freeman trustees. The soil is sandy loam; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and hops. The area is 6,787 acres, of which about 800 acres are woodland, 21 of water, 13 of tidal water and 108 of foreshore; rateable value, £10,501; the population in 1901 was 978.

Grove Ferry Station, on the South Eastern railway, is in this parish, 76 miles from London; Marsh Side is 1 mile north; Upstreet, 1 mile south is on the old Margate road.

National School, erected in 1864 & enlarged in 1885, for 190 children; average attendance, 111.
