Historical Description

COLDRED (in Domesday Book styled “Colret”) is a small village and parish 1 mile south-east from Shepherdswell station on the Canterbury and Dover line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 5 north-west from Dover, in the Eastern division of the county, Bewsborough hundred, lathe of St. Augustine, Wingham petty sessional division, Dover union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Dover and archdeaconry and diocese of Canterbury. The church of St. Pancras is an ancient building of flint and concrete in the Early Norman and Early English styles, with considerable remains of Anglo-Saxon work, and has a western bell gable, containing one bell: in the chancel is a brass to the Fyntch family, dated 1615; the church was restored in 1890, and affords 88 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1560; marriages from 1562. The living is a vicarage, annexed to that of Sibertswold, joint net yearly value £250, with 29 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Thomas Falkner M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge, and surrogate, who resides at Sibertswold. Various Roman remains have been discovered in this neighbourhood. On cutting a road through the centre of the entrenchments, a well, probably Roman, and more than 300 feet deep, was found, whence the adjoining farm-house is now supplied. The Earl of Guilford, who is lord of the manor, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, Thomas Wright Watson esq. of Tile Barn, East Woodhay, Newbury, Berks, and the trustees of the late Mr. W. H. Baynes are the principal landowners. The soil is heavy clay and chalk; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat and oats. The area is 1,552 acres; rateable value, £1,077; the population in 1901 was 147. A considerable part of the population is at Coldred Street, half a mile south.

The children of this parish attend the schools at Sibertswold & Waldershare.
