Historical Description

COWDEN is a parish and village on the road from Edenbridge to Uckfield, on the confines of the county, adjoining Sussex and Surrey, from which it is separated by the Kentwater, a tributary of the Medway, with a station 1 ¼ miles west on the Tunbridge Wells branch of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 4 miles south-east from Edenbridge, 29 from London by rail and 31 by road, and 6 miles north-east from East Grinstead, in the South Western division of the county, hundreds of Somerden, Westerham and Edenbridge, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Tonbridge petty sessional division, Sevenoaks union, East Grinstead county court district, and in the rural deanery of Tonbridge, and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. Mary Magdalene is of stone, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and has a turret with spire containing a clock and 5 bells: the east window has some ancient stained glass, in the form of medallions and dating from 1620: the pulpit, also dated 1620, retains an iron stand and hour glass: the church was restored in 1885 at a cost of £1,270, and affords 350 sittings. The register dates from 1556. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £390, with 4 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Miss Alice Nunn and others, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Charles Edward Graham-Jones M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. Here is Trinity Presbyterian Church of England, erected in 1894, with 120 sittings. George Richard Gainsford left in 1861 £1,000 in Consols for the poor, the interest to be distributed on the 21st of December every year in meat and flour; Joseph Gainsford left in 1863 £500 in Consols, the proceeds to be distributed in flannel in November every year to the poor, and there are some doles. In the vicinity are the remains of some Roman camps. The parish recreation ground was laid out and opened in 1897 as a public memorial of the Diamond Jubilee of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria. Crippenden House, the property of James Kent esq. of Edenbridge, stands in a well-timbered park-like land: the entrance hall is panelled and has a finely-carved oak chimney-piece, with a verse in bold relief and the initials of Richard and Dorothy Tichborne, 1607. Oakdene is the residence of Mrs. Darbishire. The principal landowners are Ernest Baggallay esq. Mrs. Darbishire, Miss Cattley, the Rt. Hon. John Gilbert Talbot P.C., D.C.L., M.P. of Falconhurst, Mark Beech, Oswald Augustus Smith esq. of Hammerwood Lodge, East Grinstead, E. M. Denny esq. of Chiddingstone, the representatives of the late Rev. T. Harvey and James Kent esq. of Edenbridge. The soil is clayey and gravelly; subsoil, gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans and hops. The area is 3,238 acres of land and 22 of water; assessable value, £4,198; the population in 1901 for the whole civil parish was 733, and of the ecclesiastical, 524.

National School (mixed), formed out of three cottages, to hold 77 children, and infants’ school to hold 31 infants; average attendance, 103.
