Historical Description

Cranbrook is situated on the road leading from Maidstone by Stylebridge, towards Hawkhurst and Sussex, and consists of one large street, of about three quarters of a mile in length, with another branching from it at right angles.

There is a weekly market held here, for the sale of corn and hops, and it is also a plentiful one for meat and other provisions. There is also a fair, at which much business is transacted on the day mentioned in our list. The church is a large and well-proportioned edifice. Part of this building fell to the ground in the year 1725, through the failure of one of the columns; but the damage was repaired by brief, and the church was reopened in 1731. Here are two schools for gratuitous education, founded in the 16th century.

CRANBROOK is an extensive parish, and market and union town, situated in a valley on the Crane, a small tributary of the Medway, with a station about 1 ¾ miles from the town on the Hawkhurst and Paddock Wood branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and is 48 miles from London, 14 south from Maidstone and 6 south from Staplehurst station on the South Eastern railway, and is the head of a petty sessional division and county court district, in the Southern division of the county, hundreds of Barkley and Cranbrook, lathe of Lower Scray, rural deanery of West Charing, archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury. The town is lighted with gas by a company.

This place has given the title of Earl and Viscount to the Gathorne-Hardy family.

The church of St. Dunstan is of sandstone, in the Perpendicular style, and has a tower containing a clock and 8 bells: there are helmets and banners of the family of Roberts, of Glassenbury, with monumentas memorials, several brasses, two altar tombs, various monuments, some ancient stained glass and six memorial windows: on the south side of the nave is a rectangular baptistery of stone, constructed in 1725, for the purpose of immersion: the church was restored in 1879 and 1893—94: the church plate, of silver gilt, is plain and massive and dates from 1730: there are 1,000 sittings. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from the year 1559; burials from 1553. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £243, with 23 acres of glebe and residence, erected in 1871, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1898 by the Rev. William Bell M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. Here is a Congregational chapel, founded in 1710; also Calvinstic and Baptist chapels.

The London and County Banking Company Limited, have a branch here.

The trade of this town consists chiefly in the supply of goods throughout the Weald of Kent; some brewing end malting is also carried on.

There are two hotels in the town, the “George,” a good family and commercial establishment; has a billiard room and a large room suitable for dinners and balls; and there is the “Bull,” a commercial and family hotel, with a billiard room and lofty dining room. The Railway Hotel, near the station, has been entirely rebuilt.

A hop and corn market is held on every alternate Wednesday in the Vestry Hall and fairs on the 30th May and 29th September, for horses and cattle.

Cranbrook is the headquarters of 2nd Volunteer Battalion (The Weald of Kent), The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) and the A Company of the Battalion.

The Literary Association occupies rooms in the hall supplied with the daily, weekly and local papers, and a library of over 1,000 volumes.

The Cramp Institute and Reading Room is in High st.

A county Police Station was erected in 1865, at a cost of about £2,000; it has residence for a superintendent; the station has a lock-up for prisoners previous to their transfer to Maidstone.

The Passmore Edwards Convalescent Home for the Metropolitan Hospital, Kingsland road, London, was built in 1897, at a total cost of £3,000, including furnishing, and will hold 20 patients.

Filmer’s charity of £4 14s. is distributed to the poor in clothes.

There are several chalybeate springs in the parish, which possess the same qualities as the Tonbridge waters.

Glassenbury, 2 miles west, is the seat of Major John Roberts Alkin-Roberts J.P.; the house, which is surrounded by a moat, has been restored; the grounds are extensive. Angley, half a mile north-west, is the seat of Edward Locke Tomlin esq. D.L., J.P. Swifts, the property of Lieut,-Col. Boyd Francis Alexander, is situated in a well-wooded park of 200 acres, but is at present (1902) unoccupied.

The Earl of Cranbrook G.C.S.I., P.C. is lord of the manor. Fiennes Stanley Wykeham Cornwallis esq. of Linton Park, Isaac Lewis esq. of Bedgebury Park, E. L. Tomlin esq. of Angley Park, Lieut.-Col. B. F. Alexander, Old Willesley, and Major J. R. Atkin-Roberts are the principal landowners. The soil is clay and loam. The crops are chiefly hops, wheat and beans, with a good proportion of pasture. The area is 10,350 acres of land and 22 of water; rateable value, £18,265; the population, including Sissinghurst, in 1891 was 4,046, and in 1901, 3,949, which includes 13 officers and 99 inmates in the workhouse.

The population attached to the parish church in 1901 was 2,962.

Hartley is a mile and a half south-west. The Cranbrook Union Workhouse is situated here.

Petty Sessions are held at the Vestry Hall the first thursday in every month at 11 a.m.. The following places are included in the Petty Sessional Division:— Benenden, Biddenden, Cranbrook, Frittenden, Goudhurst, Halden, Hawkhurst, Horsmonden, Marden, Newenden, Rolvenden, Sandhurst & Staplehurst.

SCHOOLS

Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, founded by Simon Lynch, in 1574, was chartered by Queen Elizabeth shortly after her visit to the town: the school buildings include a large school room, dining hall, library & sanitorium, erected in 1885, at a cost of £5,000, a chemical & physical laboratories, open-air swimming bath gymnasium & museum, also a workshop with lathes, in which carpentry & turning are taught: there are two scholarships of the annual value of £25, and tenable for three years, at the University of Cambridge. The following scholarships are tenable in the school:-Three Dennett & Spicer scholarships, two Deuce scholarships, each of a yearly value of not less than £10 & not more than £20; two entrance scholarships, each of the annual value of £40, tenable for three years & open to all boys under 16 years: there are now (1902) about 100 boys: Rev. Charles Frederick Forbes-Muller M.A. headmaster.

National (boys, girls & infants), erected in 1823 & reestablished in 1835. for 500 children; there are now on the books 145 boys, 125 girls & 145 infants; average attendance, 120 boys, 99 girls & 120 infants: in 1880 the master’s residence was converted into class rooms, at the expense of Mr. C. Cramp & a new residence for the master erected by subscription at a cost of about £500.
