Historical Description
Crayford, two miles from Dartford, is a large village, and derives its name from its situation on the river Cray, which here flows in a divided stream. Some writers have assigned the Noviomagus of the Itinerary to this spot. In the year 457, Hengist defeated the Britons under Vortiraer in a decisive battle at this place. The church contains a great number of ancient memorials, and many more were destroyed by a fire, which burnt down part of the fabric. In the neighbourhood of Crayford, upon the river, are several large manufactories for printing calicoes, and some bleaching grounds for linens. Crayford had formerly a weekly market, but it has long been disused.
There are now to be seen as well in the heaths near Crayford, as in the fields and woods hereabout, many artificial caves, or holes in the earth, some of which are ten, some fifteen, and others twenty fathoms deep; at the mouth, and thence downwards, they are narrow, like the tunnel or passage of a well, but at the bottom they are large and of great compass, insomuch that some of them have several rooms or partitions, one within another, strongly vaulted and supported with pillars of chalk. Mr. Hasted supposes them to have been excavated by the Saxons; but other writers, and among them the learned author of "Munimenta Antiqua," have conceived them to be the works of the Britons, because Diodorus Siculus expressly tells that the Britons did lay up their corn in subterraneous repositories.
CRAYFORD (mentioned in Domesday Book) is an ancient parish and village, on the old road from London to Dover, with a station on the Dartford loop line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and is 2 miles south from Erith a mile and a half west from Dartford, although part of the parish extends to within a quarter of a mile of the suburbs of that town, and 13 from London. The parish is in the North-Western division, of the county, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Lessness hundred, Dartford union, petty sessional division and county court district, and in the rural deanery of East Dartford, archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury. The river Cray runs through the village and is navigable from the Thames to within a mile of the place, to which it gives its name, and upon this stream, near to the village, are several extensive silk and calico-printing establishments, a tannery and a gun and ammunition factory. The parish is supplied with water by the Kent Water Co. from their works here, and lighted by the West Kent Gras Co. from works at Nettle Bottom, on the Dover road, which also supply the villages of Bexley, Bexley Heath and also East Wickham. The church of St. Paulinus is an ancient structure of flint and rag stone, in the Perpendicular style, and has a tower containing a clock and 8 bells: there is a tomb with life-size figures in marble of William Draper esq. of Crayford, 1650, and Mary, his wife, 1652: the east window and 10 others are stained: the fabric was restored in 1861 at a cost of about £1,100, and subsequently enlarged in 1881: the church possesses an engraved brass processional cross, brought from Magdala, in Abyssinia, on its capture by the late Lord Napier, 13 April, 1868, and presented to the church by a former curate: there are 550 sittings, about one third of which are free. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £420, including 57 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1888 by the Rev. John Price Alcock M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford.
There is also a Catholic church dedicated to St. Mary, with a house for the priest and a school attached, also Baptist chapel, erected in 1810, with 360 sittings, and a Wesleyan chapel. Four almshouses were erected in 1866 by Mrs. Stable, as a memorial to her husband and for the benefit of four aged persons, each of whom receives one shilling a week; a clergy house was also built in the same year by Miss Swaisland, partly as a memorial to Charles Swaisland, of which the rent is used for the benefit of the sick of the parish. A village hall, in connection with a temperance hotel, called “The British Workman,” was erected in the High street in 1874 by the late Sir Stevenson Arthur Blackwood K.C.B. of Shortlands (d. 1893). A fair is held here on the 24th of August. Pemmell’s charity of £3 yearly, derived from money left by Mrs. Pemmell and invested in Consols, is for bread; Say’s charity of £27 yearly, left by Miss Say, of Crayford, and similarly invested, is for coal. There are also Allnutt’s charity of £13 a year for Sunday schools and other church purposes and for repairing monuments of the family of Allnutt; Raymond's charity of £2 17s. 10d. yearly for coals; Susannah Jackson’s charity of £180 Consols for the support of the day schools; and Day’s charity of £99 7s. 6d. invested in Consols for bread, coals or blankets. In the parish are several caves, some of which are 20 fathoms deep, widening in circumference; there is a tradition that they were formed by the ancient inhabitants as places of security. There are also chalk pits and brickfields. Capt. Miles Barne, of Sotterley Hall, Wangford, Suffolk, who is lord of Crayford manor, and the trustees of the late Frederick Stoneham esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is gravel; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are grain; much fruit is grown. The area of the parish is 2,444 acres of land, 11 of water, 120 of tidal water and 35 of foreshore; rateable value, £28,208; the population in 1891 was 5,268, and in 1901, 6,572 in the civil, and 5,393 in the ecclesiastical parish.
