Historical Description

CUDHAM is an extensive parish and widely-scattered village, 2 miles to the west of the road from London to Sevenoaks on the Surrey border, 3 ½ miles south-west from Orpington station on the Tonbridge line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 7 north-west from Sevenoaks, and 7 ½ south from Bromley, in the Western division of the county, Ruxley hundred, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Bromley petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of West Dartford, archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury. The church of SS. Peter and Paul, which dates from the 12th century, is of flint and brick in the Perpendicular style, and has a central tower containing 4 bells: the church was thoroughly restored in 1890 at a cost of about £4,000: there are 350 sittings. In the churchyard are some very fine yew trees. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1653; marriages, 1654. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £170, in the gift of Sampson Copestake esq. and held since 1898 by the Rev. Harold Augustus Curtis M.A. of Christ's College, Cambridge. Here are Wesleyan and Baptist chapels. The Right Hon. Sir William Hart Dyke bart. P.C. of Lullingstone Castle, is lord of the manor. Earl Stanhope and the Earl of Derby are the principal landowners. The soil is clayey, with a great quantity of chalk and flint; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 5,923 acres; rateable value, £6,712; the population in 1901 was 1,111.

National School, erected in 1851, & enlarged in 1901 for 187 children; average attendance, 61 boys, 63 girls & 73 infants.
