Historical Description

The parish Church of Darent, or Darenth, a village so called from its contiguity to the river Dareut, about two miles to the left of our road, is a small ancient structure, entitled from the peculiarity of its construction to the notice of the traveller. The Rev. Mr. Deone, and the late Mr. Thorpe supposed it to be of Saxon workmanship. The font is curiously wrought, and ornamented on the outside with sculptures in relief.

At St. Margaret at Helles, a hamlet in Darent parish, are the ruins of a very ancient chapel, consisting scarcely of any thing more than the lower part of a square tower. This fragment, however, is interesting, on account of the layers of Roman bricks that are to be seen in the walls, and in the arch of the doorway on the east side, which is wholly constructed with them.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

DARENTH (or Darent), a village and parish, takes its name from the river Darent, on the banks of which it is situated, 1 ½ miles north from the Farningham Road station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 2 miles south-east from Dartford, 7 south-west from Gravesend and 20 from London; it is in the North Western division of the county, Axton hundred, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Dartford petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Gravesend and archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester: it was given by Athelstan to Duke Eadulf, who in 940 gave the church and manor to the cathedral church of Canterbury, but the chapter afterwards exchanged these for Lambeth with the chapter of Rochester, and the manor is now in the hands of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. South Darenth 1 mile south is principally in Horton Kirby parish. The church of St. Margaret is a small and ancient edifice of stone, partly of Norman work, and dating from the 13th century: the tower is crowned by a shingled pyramidal spire, and contains 3 bells, and of 13th century work: the eastern portion of the church and the font are Norman: there are some interesting monuments and five stained windows, and sittings for 150 persons. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1631; marriages, 1695. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £140, with 4 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Rochester, and held since 1883 by the Rev. Henry Bingham Stevens M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and rural dean of Gravesend. Here is a Presbyterian chapel, with 150 sittings. The poor have £29 6s. 8d. yearly from a bequest by Sir T. Smith now in the hands of the Skinners’ Company, of London, and £36 from other sources. The Asylum for Imbeciles and schools for imbecile children, erected here between 1876 and 1888, at a total cost, including small pox hospital, of £454,000, by the Metropolitan Asylums Board, constitute one of the largest establishments of the kind in the kingdom: the buildings stand on the uplands some 200 feet above high-water level, and include two massive water towers about 100 feet in height, a clock tower, chapel, and recreation halls. The schools (and attached pavilions) contain nearly 1,000 imbecile children, and the asylum will hold 1,050 adults, with about 360 officers; the grounds and farm comprise about 170 acres, including a small part of Darenth wood: the water supply is derived from a well in the chalk 250 feet deep, whence it is pumped to the tower tanks: one acre of the ground has been set apart and consecrated as a cemetery. Gore Farm Small Pox Convalescent Hospital in Darenth wood was erected in 1888 for 1,192 patients, and enlarged in 1902 for about the same number. Darenth Grange is the residence of Mrs. Fleet. A little south of the town, on the farm of Mr. J. M. Burtenshaw, are the remains of an important Roman villa, uncovered in 1894; an area of about 100 square yards has been enclosed and excavated under the supervision of Mr. George Payne F.S.A, of Rochester, and several chambers have been found, two of which have tesselated flooring, and the walls retain traces of paintings in distemper: there is also a series of baths with a hypocaust, and other apartments: coins of Valens, A. D. 364, and Tetricus, A.D. 267, have been met with, and a variety of relics and earthenware. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners, Mrs. Fleet, William Tristram esq. of Bolton, Lancashire, and Percy Lewis Hassell esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is light and dry, the subsoil chalk. The chief crops, are vegetables and fruit, with a smaller portion of grain. The area is 2,215 acres of land and 8 of water; rateable value, £19,616; the population in 1901 was 3,493, including 1,989 inmates and 79 officials in the Imbecile Asylum, and 122 inmates in Gore Farm Convalescent Hospital for Infectious Diseases.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 9 March, 1875; Stephen Munn, Lanes End, clerk to the board & attendance officer.

Board School, Green Street Green (mixed & infants), built in 1896, for 220 children; average attendance, 165.
