Historical Description

DETLING is a village and parish situated at the foot of the chalk scarp, on the road from Maidstone to Sittingbourne and also on the ancient pilgrim’s road from Winchester to Canterbury, 2 miles from Bearsted station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 2 ½ north-east from Maidstone, in the Mid division of the county, Maidstone hundred and county court district, lathe of Aylesford, Bearsted petty sessional division, Hollingbourn union, Sutton rural deanery and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. Martin is of rough flints in the Early English and later styles, and has a tower of Portland stone, with spire, containing one bell: there is a monument to the Foote family, 1788, a very richly carved lectern of the Decorated period, an ancient poor’s box cut out of the solid wood and the upper part of a stone coffin slab, bearing the effigy of a tonsured Driest, probably of the 13th century: the church affords 110 sittings, 60 being free. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1558; marriages, 1563; burials, 1571. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £200, including 30 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Henry Howard Letchworth M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. East Court, the property of the Rev. Henry Halford Rugg, of Lansdown road, Bath who is lord of the manor and principal landowner, is now occupied by Francis William Badcock esq. The soil is chalk and flint, and yields chalk of the finest quality, extensively used in lime works. The chief crops are wheat and roots. The area is 1,589 acres; rateable value, £1,808; the population in 1901 was 289.
