Historical Description

DODDINGTON is a parish and village, seated in a valley, 4 miles south from Teynham station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 6 south-east of Sittingbourne, 6 south-west from Faversham, and 49 from London, in the North Eastern division of the county, Teynham hundred, lathe of Scray, Faversham petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Ospringe and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of St. John the Baptist is of flint, in the Early English and Transition styles, and has a tower containing 2 bells: in the south chapel is a slab with an incised cross and inscription in Lombardic characters; the pulpit is Jacobean; in 1873—4 the chancel was re-paved and fitted with new stalls: the church contains 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1589. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, with residence, in the gift of the Archdeacon of Canterbury, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Stephen Herbert Wynn Hughes-Games M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. The Sunday school was erected at the cost of the vicar, by whom it was enlarged in 1878. There is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel. The charities are of £12 yearly value. A drinking pump, for the use of the school children, was erected in 1902, in memory of Hubert Faunce-de Laune, of the Duke of Cambridge’s Own Imperial Yeomanry, who was killed at Lindley, South Africa, May 20Th 1900. Doddington Place, the seat of Sir John Frederick Croft bart. J.P. is a large mansion of red brick, in the Elizabethan style. Sharsted Court, the seat of Alured Faunce-de Laune esq. J.P. is an ancient mansion, modernized in the early part of the 18th century, and stands amid park-like grounds of about 250 acres. Sir John F. Croft bart. Alured Faunce-de Laune esq. and Sir Edward Leigh Pemberton K.C.B. of 5 Warwick sq. London, are the principal land owners. The soil and subsoil various. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans and turnips. The area is 1,945 acres; rateable value, £2,849; the population in 1901 was 492.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 28 April 1875 for the united district of Doddington & Wychling, & March 14, 1876, Newnham was included in the district; Miss Elvy, clerk to the board; Thomas Smith attendance officer.
