Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
DUNKIRK, formerly an extra-parochial liberty, is a ville, lying on the borders of the forest called Blean Wood, of which it was formerly a part, and on the road from Canterbury to Faversham, 4 ½ miles west from Canterbury West station, 5 ½ miles from Canterbury East station, and 4 south-east from Faversham station, all on the South Eastern and Chatham railway and 50 ½ from London by road, in the North Eastern division of the county, lathe of St. Augustine, Westgate hundred, Faversham petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Ospringe, and archdeaconry of Canterbury. Christ Church, erected in 1840, is built of flint, and has a tower containing a clock and one bell; there are three stained windows. The church was restored in 1878, and has 330 sittings. The register dates from the year 1841. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, with 4 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1854 by the Rev. William John Springett M.A. of Wadham College, Oxford. Berkeley, the residence of Henry D. Barnes esq. is on some of the highest land in the county and from the observatory in the grounds extensive views are afforded on each side for many miles, including Essex and Pegwell Bay. Dunkirk House is the residence of Capt. Charles Gonne. Earl Sondes, who is lord of the manor, Henry D. Barnes esq. Sir Edwyn Sandys Dawes K.C.M.G, of Hernhill, Faversham, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and W. O. Hammond esq. of Nonington, are the largest landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, fruit and hops. The population in 1901 was 876; the area is 5,227 acres; rateable value, £3,737.
Bossenden is 1 mile north-east; Winterbourn half a mile south.
Bossenden Wood, in this parish, was the scene of riots in 1838. John Nicholls Thom, better known by his assumed name, Sir William Courtenay, took up his residence here, but in consequence of certain lawless acts by him and his followers a warrant was issued for his apprehension; he, however, shot the constable sent to arrest him (31 May, 1838), whereupon a detachment of the 45th Regiment, under the command of Major Armstrong and Lieutenant Bennett, was dispatched from Canterbury to put down the rioters and vindicate the law: Lieutenant Bennett with his force met Courtenay with 100 of his followers at Bossenden Wood; the Riot Act was then read and on Bennett approaching to discuss with Courtenay, the latter immediately shot him dead: a soldier then promptly fired upon and killed the ringleader, and a general affray ensued, in which ten rioters were slain: Courtenay’s body and those of six of the rioters were buried in the churchyard of the adjoining parish of Hernhill. There is a mural tablet to Lieut. Bennett in Canterbury Cathedral.
