Historical Description
EAST LANGDON is a parish and small village, half a mile south from Martin Mill station on the Dover and Deal section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 3 ½ north from Dover, in the Eastern division of the county, Cornilo hundred, lathe of St. Augustine, Wingham petty sessional division, Dover union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Sandwich and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of St. Augustine is a small edifice of rough flints, mainly in the Norman style, with a chancel of the 14th century, and has a modern tower containing 4 bells: in 1892 the church was thoroughly restored: there are two stained windows and a mural tablet: the church affords about 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £102, with 2 ½ acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Earl of Guilford, and held since 1902 by the Rev. Henry Tomlison M.A. Cambridge. Miss Banks, of Oxney Court, is the lay impropriator of another tithe, commuted to £65. The Primitive Methodist chapel here was erected in 1875.
The works of the East Kent District Water Co. are at Martin, in this parish: the reservoir has a capacity of 130,000 gallons. Lord Northbourne, of Betteshanger, is lord of the manor; the principal landowners are the Earl of Guilford, Maj. Herbert Delamark Banks, of Oxney Court, and James and George Jeken esqrs. The soil is chalk; subsoil, principally chalk. The chief crops are wheat, turnips, barley &c. The area is 1,085 acres; rateable value, £1,226; the population in 1901 was 310.
