Historical Description

EAST MALLING is a parish and large village, extending to the navigable river Medway, 1 mile east from Mailing station on the Maidstone and Ashford branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 5 miles west from Maidstone, in the Mid division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, Larkfield hundred, Mailing petty sessional division and union, county court district of Maidstone, rural deanery of North Mailing and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. James is of Kentish rag, chiefly in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, but the greater part of the tower is believed to be Norman, and it contains a clock and 6 bells: there axe a number of modern stained windows and several brasses with effigies: the church was restored in 1871 and the north aisle restored and the bells rehung in 1885: the church affords 700 sittings. The register dates from the year 1572. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £450, with residence and 6 acres of glebe, in the gift of William Lewis Wigan esq. and held since 1897 by the Rev. Walter Edward Buckland M.A. of Keble College, Oxford. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. Paper making is the staple trade; two mills are employed in this manufacture and there are brickfields and a corn mill. Miss Smith’s almshouses are for 5 poor women of the parish, each of whom has an annuity of £20. Bradbourne House, in this parish, is the seat of Miss Twisden, who is the lady of the manor and impropriator of the great tithes. The principal landowners are O. J. L. Bird esq. T. and P. Phillips esqrs. William Lewis Wigan esq. the Twisden family, trustees of Mrs. Wells, R. Mercer esq. of Rodmersham House, and Samuel Lee Smith esq. J.P. The soil is sandy loam; subsoil, Kentish rag. The chief crops are hops, fruit and corn. The area is 2,781 acres of land, of which 300 acres are planted with hops, 8 of water, 8 of tidal water and 11 of foreshore; rateable value, £9,705; the population in 1901 was 2,391.
