Historical Description
EAST SUTTON is a parish 4 miles north-by-west from Headcorn station on the Tonbridge and Ashford line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway and 6 ½ south-east from Maidstone, in the Mid division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, hundred of Eyhorne, petty sessional division of Bears ted, Hollingbourn union, Maidstone county court district, Sutton rural deanery and archdeaconry of Maidstone. A tributary of the Benilt rises to the east of the church. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is an edifice of stone of the 14th and 15th centuries, and has a tower containing 6 bells: there are monuments to the Filmer family: the church was restored in 1897 at a cost of £1,400, and affords 350 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1648, marriages and burials from 1649. The living is a vicarage, annexed to Sutton Valence, joint net yearly value £152, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Rochester, and held since 1884 by the Rev. David Harding M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, who resides at Sutton Valence. A charity left by Sir Beversham Filmer bart (d. 31 Dec. 1805) provides £36 yearly for educational purposes and £10 for the distribution of bread and fuel; £29, derived from other sources, is chiefly distributed in money. East Sutton Park is the residence of Robert Henry Bullock Marsham esq. M.A., J.P. esq.; it has attached grounds of 70 acres. Sir Robert Marcus Filmer bart. of 22 Lowndes street, London S W, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil of the northern part of the parish is the limestone called Kentish rag, and of the southern part Wealden clay. The chief crops are hops, wheat and fruit. The area is 1,593 acres of land and 3 of water; rateable value, £2,237; the population in 1901 was 311.
