Historical Description

East Wickham Church, about six miles from Dartford, on the right of our road, is a small and ancient building of flint and stone, consisting of a pave and chancel, with a shingled turret rising from the west end of the roof. It contains several ancient memorials. On a slab in the pavement of the chancel is inlaid in brass a cross fleury, containing small busts of a male and female, in very ancient French dresses. On another slab, now covered by a pew, are brasses of a man and his three wives. The former was a "youraan of the garde," and died in 1568; he is represented in his uniform, a small ruff, short jacket, and trunk hose; at his left side a sword, and on his breast a rose, surmounted by a crown.

EAST WICKHAM is a village and parish, on the road from London to Dartford, 10 miles from the former and 5 north-west from the latter place, and about 2 miles from Plumstead and Abbey Wood stations on the North Kent section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, in the North Western division of the county, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Little and Lessness hundreds, Dartford union, petty sessional division and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Woolwich and archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester. The Bexley Heath railway, constructed during 1894—7, and connecting this place with Dartford, Erith and Blackheath has a station in the parish called “Welling.” East Wickham has, since 1902, been controlled by the Bexley Urban Council. The church of St. Michael is a small and plain building of flint and brick, with some Early English work, and consists of chancel and nave, south porch and a wooden belfry at the west end containing 3 bells: the east window is a memorial to the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas, of Belgrova Park, and was erected by their children in 1889: there are 110 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1730; marriages, 1754; burials, 1715. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £125, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of St. Saviour’s, Southwark, and held since 1886 by the Rev. John Middleton Beynon M.A. of Jesus College, Oxford, who resides at Bexley Heath The Provost and Fellows of Queen’s College, Oxford, are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are O. E. D’Avigdor-Goldsmid esq. of Somerhill, Tonbridge, Mrs. Morgan Yeatman and Richard Jones esq. The soil is various, but is chiefly gravel, subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are cereals of all kinds and much fruit. The area is 892 acres of land and 3 of water; rateable value, £6,948; the population in 1901 was 1,661.

Endowed School, founded & endowed by William Foster in 1727, the annual income now amounting to £247; the present schools, with residence for matter, were erected in 1879 for 421 children; average attendance, full; it is governed by a committee of 9 members, of which the vicar is chairman, & Richard Jones esq. vice-chairman & correspondent.

Buses run through, hourly in morning & half-hourly afternoon, between Woolwich & Bexley Heath.
