Historical Description

EASTLING is a well-wooded parish and village, pleasantly situated, 5 miles south-west from Faversham station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 7 miles south-east of Sittingbourne, 14 north-west of Ashford and 49 from London, in the North Eastern division of the county, Faversham hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, lathe of Scray, and in the rural deanery of Ospringe and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of St. Mary is of flint and stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and has a western tower containing 6 bells: there are several mural monuments: the edifice was restored in 1856, at a cost of about £3,000, and affords 350 sittings, 185 being free: in the churchyard, near the entrance to the porch, is a yew tree supposed to be 1,000 years old. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, gross yearly value £400, with residence and 36 acres of glebe, in the gift of W. Schoolcroft Burton esq. of Childrey, Berks, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Thomas Musgrave Burton B.A. of St. John’s College, Oxford. There are two manors: Divan Court and North Court, both of which belong to Lord Harris G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E. Lord Harris and Mr. Henry Read, of Wingfield, Stalisfield, are the principal landowners. The soil and subsoil are various. The chief crops are wheat, barley, peas, beans, fruit, hops, oats and turnips. The area is 1,934 acres; rateable value, £2,294; the population in 1901 was 369.

North Court is half a mile north; Tong, half a mile south; Arnold’s Oak, 1 mile south-east; North Eastling, 1 mile north Divan Court adjoins the church.

A School Board of 5 members was formed here 18 Nov. 1879; Allan Tassell, 20 West street, Faversham, clerk to the board.

Board School (mixed), built in 1880, for 150 children; average attendance, 95.
