Historical Description
The little village of Eastry seems to have been formerly a place of great distinction, and was the residence of some of the Saxon kings of Kent. The Church is a large building, and contains some remains of Saxon, or Norman architecture.
EASTRY is a parish which gives name to the hundred and union, and is on the road from Sandwich to Dover and on the Roman road to the latter place, 2 ½ miles south-west from Sandwich station on the Dover and Margate section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 4 ½ north-west from Deal and 86 from London, in the Eastern division of the county, lathe of St. Augustine, petty sessional division of Wingham, county court district of Sandwich, rural deanery of Sandwich and archdeaconry and diocese of Canterbury. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is an edifice of flint and nibble, in the Norman, Early English and Decorated styles, and has a tower containing 5 bells and a clock: there are several ancient brasses and an octagonal pier bearing a remarkable incised circle for finding the Sunday letter: the restoration of the church, commenced in 1847, is still (1902) proceeding: there are 415 sittings, 210 being free. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £170, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Charles Dudley Lampen, who is also chaplain of Eastry union. Here are small Wesleyan and Baptist chapels. The Union chapel, built in 1873, at a cost of about £1,000, will seat 240. In the immediate vicinity of the village is an excavation for chalk, extending in winding passages through the chalk to a great depth; it is occasionally illuminated with excellent effect. At Statenborough and in the neighbourhood of Woodnesborough, the “burg” or fortification of the god Woden, are ancient remains. The “Betteshanger Cottage Hospital,” promoted by the late Lady Northbourne, and erected here in 1879, is at the south end of the village and contains two wards with 7 beds; it was built for the treatment of the poor of both sexes in cases of temporary illness, but is now used as a convalescent home for patients from the parishes, of Ash, Betteshanger, Chillenden, Eastry, Eythorpe, Ham, Knowlton, Mongeham, Northbourne, Nonington, Tilmanstone, Waldershare, Woodnesborough and Worth Greville’s charity, of £80 yearly, left in 1834 by W. F. Greville esq. of Eastry, is distributed in doles of £10 each to 8 old persons of either sex, 6 of whom are occupants of 6 cottages, erected by W. F. Greville esq. in 1834; there are two out-pensions connected with the charity and another out-pension of £10 has since been founded by Miss M. Boteler of Eastry: there are other charities of about £20 yearly value, derived from legacies and distributed in coney. Statenborough House is the residence of Sir James Broadwood Lyall K.C.S.I., J.P. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are lords of the manor, and Commander Wm. John Casberd-Boteler R.N. are the largest landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 2,732 acres; rateable value, £5,664; the population in 1901 was 1,329, including 13 officers and 251 inmates in the workhouse.

Eastry Union comprises the following parishes, viz.:-Ash-next-Sandwich, Barfreston, Betteshanger, Chillenden, Deal, Eastry, Elmstone, Eythorne, Goodnestone, Great Mongeham, Ham, Knowlton, Little Mongeham, Nonington, Northbourne, Preston-by-Wingham, Ripple, St. Bartholomew (Sandwich), St. Clement (Sandwich), St. Mary (Sandwich), St. Peter (Sandwich), Sholden, Staple-next-Wingham, Stourmouth Sutton-by-Dover, Tilmanstone, Waldershare, Walmer, Wingham, Woodnesborough & Worth The area of the union is 46,464 acres; rateable value in 1902, £138,925; the population in 1901 was 31,533.
The Workhouse, at the south-western end of the village, is a structure of brick to which an infirmary was added in 1871, with 104 beds & detached wards for contagious fever cases; it will hold 494 inmates.
National school (mixed & infants), erected in 1859 & enlarged in 1894, for 200 children; average attendance, 121 boys & girls & 61 infants.
