Historical Description
In the village of Eastwell there is a tradition that a natural son of King Richard III. named Richard Plantagenet, fled hither from Leicester immediately after the fatal battle of Bosworth, fought in 1485, in which the king lost both his life and crown, and that he lived here in a mean capacity, having leave given him by Sir Thomas Moyle, as soon as he was discovered by him, to build for himself a small house, in one of the fields near his mansion of Eastwell Place, in which he afterwards lived and died, which is supposed to be corroborated by an entry in the parish register. He died in 1550, aged, as is believed, about eighty-one. The entry in the parish-register is as follows, under the article of burials:—Rychard Plantagenet was buried the 22th daye of Desember anno di supra." (1550). It is observable that the letter, or mark, is put before the name of every person of noble family mentioned in it. And against the north wall of the high chancel, there is an ancient tomb, without inscription, with the marks of two coats of arms, the brasses gone, which is said to have been erected for this Richard Plantagenet.
EASTWELL, deriving its name from the springs or wells with which it is watered, and bearing the prefix of “East” to distinguish it from the adjoining parish of Westwell, is a village and parish, about 3 ½ miles west of Wye station on the Ashford and Canterbury line and 3 miles north-east from Hothfield station on the Maidstone and Ashford section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 3 miles north from Ashford and 56 from London, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Wye, lathe of Scray, Ashford petty sessional division and county court district, East Ashford union, and in the rural deanery of East Charing, archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury. The ancient church of St. Mary is of flint in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and has a tower containing 6 bells: there is a fine tomb with recumbent figures in white marble and a marble bust and other memorials to the Finch family, Earls of Winchilsea, and an ancient tomb, supposed to be that of Richard the last of the Plantagenets, there appearing an entry in the burial register that Richard Plantagenet was buried at Eastwell on the 22nd December, 1550: the east and west windows are stained, and there are 200 sittings, 100 being free. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory (with the vicarage of Boughton Aluph annexed), net yearly value £408, with 12 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Lord Gerard, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Joseph Alfred Halloran M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge, who resides at Boughton Aluph. The mansion of Eastwell, now the residence of Lord Gerard, stands in a retired situation shaded by trees, some of which were planted by their present Majesties King Edward VII. and Queen Alexandra, and is a fine modern building of stone in the Tudor style: near the mansion is a small cottage, said to occupy the site where formerly stood the humble cottage erected by Richard Plantagenet, the natural son of Richard III. and inhabited by him till his death in 1550; it was here that he worked as a bricklayer on his flight from London after the defeat of his father at Bosworth Field, 22 Aug. 1485; near the site of the cottage is a fine spring of water called “Plantagenet’s Well”: the park, containing about 2,000 acres, extends into the adjoining parishes of Challock and Boughton Aluph; it contains a lake of about 60 acres, and is well stocked with deer. The ancient Pilgrims’ road runs through the park, and can be traced by the old yew trees. The mansion, which had previously been enlarged, underwent extensive structural alterations and additions in 1894. Lord Gerard is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is light; subsoil mixed. The chief crops are wheat, beans and hops. The area is 857 acres of land and 41 of water; rateable value, £1,390; the population in 1901 was 128.
