Historical Description

Eaton-bridge, or Eden-bridge, a small village on the borders of the county next to Surrey, chiefly noted for the manufacture of strong boots and shoes. Nearly 100 of the inhabitants are at present employed in this trade.

EDENBRIDGE is a market town and parish, on the road from Westerham to Uckfield, 25 ½ miles from London, 12 ½ west by Tail and 12 by road from Tunbridge Wells, on the Surrey border, and takes its name from its position on the banks of the little river Eden (one of the tributaries of the Medway), here crossed by a stone bridge of one arch, for the repairs of which there is a fund, called “The Great Stone Bridge Trust”; the South Eastern and Chatham, and the London and Brighton Railway Companies have stations here, the former about a mile and the latter a quarter of a mile north; the parish is in the South Western division of the county, hundreds of Somerden and Westerham, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Tonbridge petty sessional division and county court district, Sevenoaks union, and in the rural deanery of Tonbridge and archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury. The town is lighted with gas by a company formed in 1856, and supplied with water from the Limpsfield and Oxted Water Company’s reservoir at Pains Hill, Limpsfield. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is of stone, in the Early English and later styles, and has a tower with spire, containing a clock and 8 bells, two of which were added in 1896; there is a brass and marble monuments to the Selyard and Jemett families, and the remains of an altar-tomb of Perpendicular character to the Martin family, dated 1458; the church plate includes a chalice and paten of the middle of the 17th century; a new organ has recently (1902) been provided at a cost of about £500; the church affords 600 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £220, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1859 by the Rev. Charles Frederick Gore M.A. of St. John’s College, Oxford, and surrogate. There is a Presbyterian church-of England at Marsh Green, built in 1882 and has 200 sittings, and a Baptist chapel in the town, erected in 1847 to seat 360, with a Mission Hall at Marlpit Hill with 150 sittings; there is also an unsectarian chapel at Marlpit Hill, erected in 1902. The stock market is held every alternate Monday, and a fat stock show annually in December. The Oddfellows’ Hall, in the High street, was erected in 1886, and includes a large hall, 55 feet long and 35 feet wide, with a gallery; it will seat about 500 persons. James Holmden, of Edenbridge, gave £3 a year in 1881, to be distributed among the poor of the parish; and the Rev. Nicholas Germon M.A. late of Barn Hawe, Edenbridge, d. 1882, the sum of £100, the interest to be expended annually in the purchase of coal for distribution amongst the poor. A sum of £50 was given in 1891 by the present vicar to the Incorporated Church Building Society to be added to a like sum from the offertory to buy £100 India 3 per cent, stock, the interest to be applied to the repair of the parish church of Edenbridge. Stangrove, a mansion in the Italian style, is the residence of Gen. William Charles Robert Mylne. Lieut.-Col. Henry Streatfeild, of Chiddingstone, is lord of the manor of Edenbridge. The principal landowners are Lieut.-Col. H. Streatfeild, the trustees of the late C. R. C. Petley esq. Granville Charles Leveson-Gower esq. J.P. of Limpsfield, Surrey, James Kent esq. of Edenbridge, Thomas Alexander Mason esq. of Reigate, and Cobbett's trustees. The area is 5,287 acres of land and 42 of water; assessable value, £10,893; the population in 1901 was, civil, 2,546; ecclesiastical, 2,482.
