Historical Description

EGERTON is a parish, 3 ¼ miles north from Pluckley station on the Tonbridge and Ashford section and 4 miles east from Charing station on the Maidstone and Ashford section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 8 north-west from Ashford and 50 from London by road, in the Southern division of the county, Calehill hundred, lathe of Scray, Ashford county court district and petty sessional division, West Ashford union, and in the rural deanery of East Charing, archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury. The river Stour passes Stonebridge Green, in this parish. The church of St. James is of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and has a tower of Perpendicular work containing a clock and 5 bells; the church was restored in 1854, and renovated in 1901, when the chancel was new-roofed: it affords 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1684. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £285, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Francis Caudwell, of Magdalen Hall, Oxford. There is a Baptist chapel. Baker's charity of £1 6s. 8d. yearly, derived from land left in 1602 by Eleanor Baker, of Egerton, is for clothing. Fiennes Stanley Wykeham Cornwallis esq. of Linton Park, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil varies considerably; subsoil, clay or rock; the lower portion of the parish is mostly clay.

The chief crops are wheat, beans, oats and hops. The area is 2,782 acres of land and 4 of water; rateable value, £3,138; the population in 1901 was 698.

National School, built in 1845 & added to in 1884, for 250 children; average attendance, 51 boys, 38 girls & 37 infants.
