Historical Description

ELHAM is a large parish and ancient town and head of a union and petty sessional division, on a feeder of the Stour, with a station on the Elham Valley section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 70 miles from London, 8 north-west from Folkestone, and 12 from Canterbury, in the Eastern division of the county, Londingborough hundred, lathe of Shepway, Hythe county court district, rural deanery of Elham and archdeaconry of Canterbury; it extends from north to south about 4 ½ miles, from north-west to south-east 5 ½ miles, and has within its boundary ten manors, namely: Elham, Oxroad, Bowick, Ladwood, Mount and Bladbean, Shuttlesfield, Canterwood, Clavertigh and Hall. The town stands in the valley, on the west side of the Nailbourn stream. The church of St. Mary, built about A.D. 1200, is of Kentish rag with flint facings, in the Transition-Norman style, with later additions, and has a tower, with spire, containing a clock and 8 bells: there are 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1566. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £270, with residence, in the gift of the Warden and Fellows of Merton College, Oxford, on the nomination of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Alard Charles de Bourbel M.A., B.D. of Merton College, Oxford. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1839, and one for Bible Christians. In 1809, Lee Warley D.D. of Canterbury, presented a valuable library of 800 volumes, to be deposited in the church for the use of the parishioners, and this is still maintained. The town had formerly a market, granted in his father’s lifetime, to Prince Edward, afterwards King Edward I. to be held weekly on Mondays. A charity of £2 12s. derived from a bequest of £50 by Archdeacon Jonas Warley D.D. of Elham, in 1719, is distributed weekly in bread to 6 poor widows, and an annual sum of 20s. from the poor’s land, is distributed yearly by the Parish Council in clothes and coals. The Working Men’s Club and Reading Room, erected on land given by the Rev. W. Wodehouse M.A. vicar 1876—1900, is governed by the Canterbury Diocesan Church Trust. In a house in the High street is a curious old mantelpiece, elaborately carved and painted. The kennels of the East Kent Foxhounds are situated here, H. W. Selby-Lowndes esq. of Fox Lodge, Lyminge, is master. Dover, Folkestone and Canterbury are convenient places for hunting visitors. The principal landowners are Sir Percy D. N. Dixwell-Oxenden bart. who is lord of the manor, W. A. Mackinnon esq. of Acryse Park, and Sir John William Honywood bart. of Elmstead. The soil is chalk and clay; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley, with roots in rotation. The area is 6,599 acres; rateable value, £5,992; the population in 1901 was 1,218.

Petty Sessions are held every alternate thursday in the year at the Sessions hall, Bank street, Hythe, at 11 a.m. & on the first monday in January, March, April, June, July, September, October & December at the Rose & Crown P.H. Elham at 11 a.m.

The following places are in the Elham petty sessional division:-Acrise, Aldington, Cheriton, Elham, Elmsted, Hawkinge, Hurst, Lyminge, Lympne, Monks-Horton, Newington, Paddlesworth Postling, Saltwood, Sellinge, Stanford, Stelling, Stelling Minnis & Stowting.

ELHAM UNION

Board day, alternate thurs. 10 a.m. at the Workhouse, Lyminge.

The Union comprises the following parishes:-Acrise, Cheriton, Elham, Elmsted, Folkestone, Folkestone-next-Sandgate, Hawkinge, Hythe (St. Leonard), Lyminge, Lympne, Monks-Horton, Newington-next-Hythe, Paddlesworth Postling, Saltwood, Sandgate, Sellinge, Stanford, Stelling, Stelling Minnis, Stowting & Swingfield. The population of the union in 1901 was 52,134; area, 43,725 acres; rateable value in 1902, £369,552.

The Workhouse, Etching hill, Lyminge, a structure of red brick, was built in 1840, and will hold 346 inmates, and has since been greatly enlarged, by the addition of infirmary wards, a new chapel & other buildings.

National School, built in 1844 for 90 children & enlarged in 1871; this school now incorporates the Endowed School, founded & endowed here by the will, in 1720, of Sir John Williams kt. of Elham, for the education & clothing of 6 poor boys of the parish; it will hold 90 boys, 72 girls & 45 infants; average attendance, 50 boys, 49 girls & 40 infants.
