Historical Description
Elmley, separated from Shepey by a narrow branch of the Swale, called the Bray. This island is about three miles long and two broad; and contains about 2700 acres of land, of which 2600 are salt marshes. It constitutes a parish, and has a church. Two miles to the east of Elmley is the small island of Harty, which is about two miles in length, and one and an half in breadth. It is entirely pasture land, and maintains about 4000 sheep. It also constitutes a parish, and has a church, a small neat structure, dedicated to St. Thomas the Apostle.
ELMLEY is a parish lying to the south of Sheppey, bounded by the Swale on the south and by Fleet Creex and the river Dray on the north-west and north-east and is 4 miles south-by-east from Queenborough and 6 south from Sheerness, in the hundred of Milton; it is 4 miles in length from east to west and 2 from north to south The church of St. James was rebuilt and enlarged in 1853 and is of Kentish rag in the Early English style, with a turret containing one bell; there are about 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1828. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £180, in the gift of Miss E. M. Robertson, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Robert Beetenson Barber, Assoc K.C.L. The whole of Elmley island belongs to the University of Oxford; it is approached from Milton and Sittingbourne by King’s Ferry viaduct on the Sittingbourne and Sheerness branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, a structure erected both for railway and passenger traffic and supported on eleven arches, the centre arch forming a drawbridge; access to Elmley island is also obtained by a ferry over the Swale, made use of by King James II. during his first flight from London, on the 12th December, 1688; he then went on board a Kentish hoy, but was discovered near Faversham and taken thence by a mob of Kentish fishermen, who made him a prisoner and bore him back to London. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay and gravel. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 1,981 acres of land, 3 of water, 60 of tidal water and 433 of foreshore; rateable value, £1,063; population in 1901 was 146, scattered at Elmley, Kingshill, Housedown, Wellhouse and Saltbox.
