Historical Description

Eynesford Church, near Farningham, deserves the notice of the antiquary, as being a curious specimen of early Norman architecture. It is a small edifice, and has greatly suffered from neglect; but still exhibits a very curious ornamented doorway, opening into the body of the church from the tower.

In this parish are the remains of Eynesford Castle, consisting of large ruins of the outward walls. They appear to have been built of squared flint, and are near four feet thick.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

EYNSFORD (or Eynesford) is a parish and village most agreeably situated on the east banks of the Darenth crossed by a stone bridge of one small arch, and on the road from Sevenoaks to Farningham and Dartford, with a station on the Sevenoaks and Maidstone branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 8 miles north from Sevenoaks, 6 south from Dartford and 18 from London, in the North Western division of the county, Axton hundred, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Dartford petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of East Dartford and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The neighbourhood is a very large fruit-growing district, giving much employment to labourers in the fruit season.

The church of St. Martin is of flint in the Norman and Early English styles, and has a tower of Norman date, with spire containing a clock and 6 bells: the church has been restored and affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £195, with residence and 8 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Abraham Steers Hutchinson M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The vicarage house was erected in 1872, at a cost of about £2,000. There is a Baptist chapel here, originally built in 1796, and has 300 sittings. Charities amounting to £37 yearly are distributed. The paper mills here, the property of Messrs. Spicer and Foster Limited, employ about 60 hands. At the northern extremity of the village are the ruins of Eynsford Castle, the walls of which inclose an area of nearly an acre: the castle was formerly surrounded by a moat, now converted into an orchard, but the remains of the strong keep are still visible; the castle, leased to E. D. Till esq. is the property of the Right Hon. Sir William Hart Dyke bart. P.C., M.P. of Lullingstone Castle, who is the principal landowner. The soil is loam and chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, fruit and hops. The area is 3,532 acres of land and 8 of water; rateable value, £9,536; the population in 1901 was, civil, 2,004, ecclesiastical, 915.

Schools

A School Board of 5 members was formed 18 Aug. 1891; J. C. Hayward, Sessions house, Dartford, clerk to the board.
